Jim Carrey Confirmed To Return For Sonic 3 Movie

-

Thirty years ago today, Sonic The Hedgehog 3 was released for Sega Genesis. It would be fitting to premiere the first trailer for Sonic The Hedgehog 3 (the movie) this very day, but apparently it’s not ready yet. That didn’t stop Sonic himself from revealing a bit of new info via a CGI teaser of the logo:

Get it — Shadow? Because it’s Groundhog Day, and also everyone knows by now Shadow is in the movie…..anyway. The bigger news is that Sega and Paramount have confirmed Jim Carrey will reprise Doctor Robotnik / Eggman for the sequel, which is something no one was sure of until now. Carrey made comments last year suggesting he was thinking of retiring from acting. No one knew if it meant “immediately” or “gradually.” There was a chance Sonic 2 (the movie) could have been his final role, but thankfully not.

And there’s more casting news! Krysten Ritter has been added to the cast, along with a child actor named Alyla Browne. Fan speculation holds that Ritter could be playing Rouge the Bat, though Paramount has not confirmed it. It’s a bit more obvious who Browne is playing — Shadow has a tragic past that involved his inability to save a little girl named Maria, turning him to the Dark Side of the Speed Force (whoops, mixed a few unrelated IPs there).

Additional cast members revealed today include Cristo Fernández (Ted Lasso), Jorma Taccone (Lonely Island), James Wolk (Harley Quinn), and Sofia Pernas (Jane the Virgin). They all join returning members Ben Schwartz (Sonic), Colleen O’Shaughnessey (Tails), Idris Elba (Knuckles), James Marsden (David), Tika Sumpter (Maddie), Tom Butler and Lee Majdoub. Catch Sonic The Hedgehog 3 if you can this December.
