THQ Nordic held a digital showcase yesterday where they revealed several titles now in production under their umbrella. One is what appears to be a co-op multiplayer battle game…starring the characters from South Park.
This is significant because the last time we saw a South Park game on a console, it was a 100% authentic experience with Trey Parker and Matt Stone personally shepherding every aspect of it. it felt like actually playing an episode of the show. Matt and Trey have been involved in two South Park games: The Stick Of Truth and The Fractured But Whole. By no coincidence these are regarded as the best two South Park games ever made. Are they back to deliver a third one?
That does not appear to be the case here. THQ has given development of South Park: Snow Day to Question Games, a small-time dev team mainly known for the fantasy puzzler The Magic Circle, released in 2015. Also, everything is in 3D this time. But 3D versions of the South Park characters bring to mind the rubbish licensed quick-buck games that were made out of the property back when it was new. The notorious N64 self-titled first-person shooter and its kart-racing cousin still cause painful memories for a generation that was suckered into buying them.
Not much else is known about South Park: Snow Day at this time, other than its targeted release window of 2024 for Playstation 5, XBox Series S|X, Switch and PC. It looks more like a South Park Rally than a Stick of Truth, and that’s cause for concern.
