“We didn’t finish the job like we thought,” reads the first subtitle to Godzilla Minus Zero, the upcoming sequel to the critically praised kaiju film released three years ago. It’s the understatement of the year. Not only did Godzilla survive, but some other familiar monsters seem to have risen as well, and they’re going to be a lot harder to handle given this grounded, grim take on the series!
We meet a new character this time; Makoto Aoyama, played by Masami Nagasawa. She’s described as “a genius weather forecaster assigned to the Disaster Response Bureau.” You can sense the gears turning in her head in several shots; what does she know that the others don’t? When she speaks of a “Plan B,” what kind of plan stands up to this kind of problem?
If you live in New York, like the founder of this site does, you’ll get the chance to see Godzilla Minus Zero before anyone else. It’s having its world premiere at the New York Film Festival on September 26, over a month before its proper theatrical premiere in November. America will get it three days after Japan.
According to Toho, Godzilla Minus Zero will again focus on a Japanese family just trying to survive amid the chaos — the same one, to be clear. Survivors of the first film who will return for the second include Ryunosuke Kamiki as Koichi Shikishima, Hidetaka Yoshioka as Kenji Noda, Yuki Yamada as Shiro Mizushima, Sakura Ando as Sumiko Ota, Miou Tanaka as Tatsuo Hotta, Motosuke Iida as Akio Itagaki, and Minami Hamabe as Noriko Shikishima. Min Tanaka joins the cast as Kanji Murakami, a biologist with “deep psychological scars from the war.”
This is it, folks — which of these cast members will be left standing once Godzilla’s reign of terror is ended? Find out November 3 in Japan and November 6 in America, when Godzilla Minus Zero opens in theaters.
