First Casting News From The Librarians: The Next Chapter

Ever since the new owners took over, The CW has mostly ceased to be relevant to the average Popgeeks reader, focusing on Canadian imports and golf instead of the weird fantastical programs we used to get. However, they’re not ENTIRELY done with weird. There was a surprise order last year of a new series in Dean Devlin’s long-running Librarians thingamajig.

The Librarians (originally The Librarian, singular) started as a series of TV movies on TNT starring Noah Wyle as an initially reluctant caretaker of the Library, the secret place where all the magical artifacts of the world are stored. Three movies were produced in the 2000s, followed up by The Librarians series in the 2010s. While Wyle’s character still served as the Librarian, you didn’t see quite as much of him; instead the focus went toward his new staff of semi-Librarians led by federal agent Eve Baird (Rebecca Romijn).

With The Librarians ending at four seasons, and Devlin returning to his biggest hit Leverage for an Amazon Prime continuation, we figured we’d seen the last of the mystical library, until The New Fuddy Duddy CW somehow became interested in picking it back up. Unexpected, but welcome. We’d love a new reason to turn the network on.

And we have our first casting news: actress Jessica Green is playing a new character named Charlie Cornwall, who may be the main character similar to how Eve was really the main character of the previous series. Like Eve, Cornwall is the “Guardian,” AKA the Librarian’s bodyguard. Well, that’s only a half-truth this time. The description of her character says “Charlie, having been rejected by the Library to serve as a Guardian, was at a low point in her life when she got the call to be a ‘special guardian’ on a trial basis. Trained in the military, her dedication and martial art skills are unquestionable. If she can keep the powers that be in line, she can achieve her dream to become a permanent member of the Library.” Yeah, maybe if she works hard she’ll eventually smell apples — no wait, that’s Warehouse 13.

The Librarians: The Next Chapter is supposed to use an entirely new cast of people, but Devlin is hopeful that someone from the previous show will make a cameo somewhere. Green herself is from the last show Devlin created for The CW, The Outpost. The series currently has no release window.
