FF7 Rebirth Director Hints Of “Big Surprise” Awaiting

-

FF7 Rebirth, the middle chapter of Square Enix‘s Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy, is set to be released on Leap Year Day of next year. Ordinarily they tend to avoid spoilers, but since this game’s storyline has been out there for 25 years, there’s not much to worry about. EXCEPT in the case of any “revisions” they might have done.

The first chapter, which was simply called Remake, more or less followed the plot for the Midgar portion of the original game, but there was a meta subtext about being shackled to that storyline and by the end, the heroes had found an in-universe way to “break free” from what fate had dictated for them. It implies Square intends to go in a different direction for parts of this story, though none of the trailers have shown anything too radical, aside from Zack Fair being alive this time.

But what if the big moment….you know, THAT ONE….has been changed? Since we’re about to talk about one of the most famous cutscenes in video game history, there aren’t too many of you readers who don’t know about it already, but to anyone who somehow hasn’t found out yet about FF7’s biggest twist, you can avoid these next paragraphs. (Seriously, how’d you do it?)

Disc 1 of the original game ends with one of its cast members, a fully playable character, getting murdered by the villain — a shocking and unprecedented event at the time. In fact it’s still unusual today. During an interview at the Thailand Game Show (reported by Kotaku), FF7 Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi said “to all the gamers regarding this ‘you-know-what’ moment, we can confirm that we will give you a ‘big surprise.’ So you can look forward to later in the game.”

What does he mean? Aerith lives? Sephiroth stabs Cloud instead? Sephiroth stabs Tifa instead? Cloud reveals himself to be Sephiroth and stabs everyone? What did they do? What are we in for?

We don’t know, but we’ll find out in just a few short months. FF7 Rebirth will be released on Playstation 5 February 29, 2024.
