Fast And Furious Franchise Moving To Television

-

Whether you believe the statements of the next Fast and Furious movie being the “last” one or not, Universal has finally admitted they are not phasing out the IP — just moving it to a different venue. At NBC Universal’s upfront presentation this morning, Vin Diesel boastfully announced Fast and Furious will become a TV show. Actually, he said there would be FOUR F&F shows, but this was apparently a slip of the tongue that was corrected to the press later.

“As precious about these movies as we have been for the last decade, we have realized that fans wanted more; they wanted to expand the legacy characters and stories,” Diesel said. He will serve as executive producer of the project, with Mike Daniels and Wolfe Coleman as script writers for at least the pilot.

I’m curious what Peacock has in mind here. Fast & Furious is about, and has always been about, flashy street racing, with each movie going more over the top than the last. The kind of stunts Dom and his crew pull off on a regular basis do not come cheap, even if most of it is computer assisted. Peacock is the streamer that is reportedly iffy on granting a third season to Ted because the expense of animating one CG teddy bear in every scene is apparently too much. How do they expect to do F&F?

The main actors also don’t come cheap, but Diesel hints that the show could follow “legacy characters,” possibly meaning guys we haven’t seen in a while (whose actors are cheap to hire) or younger versions of people (who can be recast).

The “final” Fast and Furious film is called Fast Forever and is scheduled to be released in theaters March 17, 2028. Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese, Ludacris, Dwayne Johnson and Gal Gadot has signed on to return.
