Don’t Expect A Switch 2 Announcement In 2024

-

If it wasn’t obvious by now, today the experts spelled it out for us: there will definitely be no reveal of the Switch 2 in 2024, say analysts.

Everyone was certain this would be the year, and that it was only a matter of time. Lately Nintendo has had to add an asterisk to all its Directs that states the Switch 2 will not be announced that day. But the delay has made it harder to keep the console / handheld hybrid under wraps. Its specs and even its general shape have leaked by now. So why not just rip the band-aid off?

Some might point out there’s an obvious answer to that: at this point, public knowledge of an impending Switch 2 would cut into holiday sales of the Switch 1. Why would you announce a console if it obviously won’t be out until 2025 and you need the previous one to keep selling?

The problem with that logic is…it ISN’T selling. Today Nintendo cut its Switch sales projection for the fiscal year from 13.5 million units to 12.5 million units, and reduced its forecast for both sales and profits. The OG may have it its saturation point — the point where everyone who wants one already has one. And like it or not, everyone knows a successor is on the horizon even if Nintendo won’t admit it.

Nintendo promised months ago it would reveal the Switch 2 “within the fiscal year” which, for them, ends on March 31. That could mean the product won’t go on sale until the following summer or even the fall. Either way, with the Switch turning 8 in March, this is now the longest the company has stuck with a single generation of product.
