Do not Sleep on Lookism!

-

The first episode of Lookism was supposed to premiere on Netflix on November 4, 2022, but the release date was pushed back in order to show compassion for the people who died  the Seoul Halloween crowd crush. As a result, the hype surrounding the show has subsided. Now that it is available on Netflix, I’d like to remind people to check out this fantastic webtoon adaptation. It was deserving of a spot in the top five most watched shows in every country in the world. A show is typically canceled if it is unable to remain in top 10 for a month. If the webtoon is bad it won’t be lasting for 7 years and by far the eight tears. The  episodes I watched respected the source material.

Readers who prefer the English translation will have to accept some changes. The writers chose to use Korean character names. Most English-speaking fans refer to the main character as Daniel rather than Park Hyung Seok on the show (all dubs and subs included). I get used to the Korean names after few episodes even if I still refer them with their English Webtoon names. The show’s eight episodes are structured similarly to the first 27 chapters of the Manhwa.

Park Hyung Seok is character who is easy to resonate with because once most of us experienced  bullying of some form. He is more human that most Shounen Anime protagonist.

Lookism Writer talks about the Netflix Adaptation

Taejun Park, The creator of Lookism got so much success in Webtoons.  He made other Webtoon series  with huge following like Viral Hit,My Life As A Loser and Manager Kim. All of them are still ongoing and are worth reading. The success of Lookism could lead to the adaptation of his other works. Tencent made a live action Chinese adaptation before but it made so many changes it became unrecognizable. The Netflix adaptation had so much potential but it felt cut short because the first season have 8 episodes only. I hope it gets the success it deserves and have another season.
