As we covered before, Tom King is leaving Wonder Woman. (Don’t worry about his future job prospects; he’s head writer on just about every James Gunn DC cinematic project.) We now know who’s replacing him: a familiar face, Louise Simonson. She will take over the book starting in January and it will NOT be pointlessly renumbered #1, like we expected…it will continue the current numbering scheme as issue 41.
Compared to King’s extended 40-issue run, Simonson’s will be over in a blink. She and artist Cian Tormey are sticking around for just four issues, after which Eisner Award-nominated writer Stephanie Williams (Wonder Woman, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur) and artist Elena Casagrande will take over for six. Apparently the book hasn’t found a “permanent” writer and artist yet, but Simonson’s one storyline will be about Wondy and the Amazons attempting to abolish the Amazon Safety Act — the thing that’s kept her on Themyscira for much of King’s run — and once again defend justice in Man’s World. Lois Lane and the Female Furies are apparently involved.
“I haven’t written many books with female leads, and they don’t come any more iconic than Diana,” said Louise Simonson. “Teaming her up with Lois Lane, another iconic character, is a dream come true. Throw in Granny Goodness and her Female Furies? It doesn’t get more fun than that.”
“Writing Wonder Woman, not just as part of the main series but during DC’s Year of Wonder, is both intimidating and exciting,” she continued. “Intimidating because my four-issue arc is sandwiched between the brilliant Tom King run and the work of the immensely talented, smart, and funny Stephanie Williams. Exciting because I get to work with artist Cian Tormey, who draws beautiful figures, exhilarating action, and subtle emotions with equal mastery. His pages are gorgeous!”
Wonder Woman #41 will feature a main cover by Ryan Sook and variant covers by Daniel Sampere, Walter Simonson, and Tormey; you can see them below. Look for it at comic book shops January 20, 2027 for $4.99, with card stock variants at $5.99.
