DC’s December 2026 solicitations keep asking its heroes who they are once the costume, the powers, or the other name gets taken away. Batman #16 opens with Bruce Wayne shot by an assassin. Batman spends the issue chasing down his own killer and unraveling the conspiracy that put his alter ego in the crosshairs. Matt Fraction and Jorge Jiménez are still on the book. Over in Detective Comics #1116, Clark Kent is still behind bars, and Tom Taylor and Mikel Janín have Batman working the case while he faces the question the solicitation asks outright: “Did Clark Kent really commit murder?”
Poison Ivy #50 is the most direct version of the question. G. Willow Wilson and Pius Bak put Pamela Isley in the Arkham Towers facility with her friends, allies, patrons, and powers gone, “trapped within the walls” in “an utterly ordinary mortal body.” The 48-page issue asks “who exactly is Pamela Isley at the end of the day?” and it ships December 2. Wally West is depowered in The Flash #40, and everyone around him thinks the Speed Force has been making him believe things that are not true. That leaves his wife Linda and the kids as the only people he can still convince. Kara has lost her powers too, and Supergirl #20 has her keeping her identity hidden at Stanhope while campus thefts pull her back into crime-stopping. Even the Green Lanterns are running on empty in Green Lantern #42, where the Central Power Batteries on Oa are dead.
Basil Karlo gets the same treatment from the other direction in Clayface: Celebrity Dirt #6. Jude Ellison S. Doyle and Fran Galán have a doppelganger take his face and his fame, and Basil has to fight “the monster he made” by embracing “the man beneath the mud.” The same question of who a character is underneath turns up in the holiday one-shots and in the books that end this month.
Dickens gets adapted twice. Lobo #10 opens with “Lobo was dead to begin with. There is no doubt whatever about that,” and has the register of his burial signed by the clergyman, the clerk, the undertaker, and Dawg. Skottie Young writes it as a Lobo Christmas special drawn by Jim Mahfood, and it ships December 16. The other is The Joker’s Christmas Carol #1, a 64-page one-shot from Paul Dini and Kevin Altieri, two longtime Batman: The Animated Series collaborators. In it the Clown Prince of Crime is visited by three spectral forms on the night before Christmas and would rather they were food for worms. That one ships December 2.
Garth Ennis and John McCrea come back to Tommy Monaghan after 25 years in Hitman: It Was the Nineties Special #1 on December 9. Tommy is sent to find a star for the top of a tree while every killer with a grudge tries to collect on his head, and a backup story puts Baytor behind the bar of a very familiar “café.” Superman Unlimited #20 has Toyman turn Superman and Tomorrow Man into living action figures. Dan Slott and Lucas Meyer play it as the only way to catch a super-industrial spy and save Christmas. Mark Waid and Adrián Gutiérrez’s Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #48 gives the two heroes only hours to stop Ra’s al Ghul’s Four Horsemen with, as the solicitation puts it, “no backup, no support, no hope.”
Wonder Woman #40 is the conclusion of the Wonder War and of Tom King and Daniel Sampere’s run, with the Matriarch and her father, the Sovereign, gathering villains against Themyscira on December 16. Absolute Catwoman #6 is the last of six from Scott Snyder, Che Grayson, and Bengal. It ends on Selina’s choice, whether she will “return to the path she dreamed about or will she go a new way” once the Calicos and Holly Robinson’s pursuit of the Yarn have settled. Jason Aaron and Rafa Sandoval pick up Absolute Superman #26 after November’s finale with Superman having “done the unthinkable” and abandoned the Earth.
Emperor Aquaman #24 is the penultimate chapter of “The Tidal War,” with Aquaman on the run on Korugar while the war reaches its final stage in Atlantis. Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso’s 100 Bullets: The US of Anger #6 is the sixth of eight, with Loop Hughes pushed as far as the world can push him. Justice League Unlimited #26, from Mark Waid and Dan Mora, points forward instead. Dreamer has shown the League what it is up against, and the solicitation says the team “cannot survive the coming battle.” Ray Palmer is leading the effort to fortify the DC Universe.
The word crisis also sits on the collected side of the month. DC Finest: Crisis: Crisis on Infinite Earths Part Four is the fourth and final volume of the reading-order collection, covering Crisis on Infinite Earths #10-12 and its tie-ins, on February 9, 2027. Alan Moore appears twice among the facsimiles. Watchmen #4, the Dr. Manhattan issue on Mars, ships December 23. Swamp Thing #34, “Rite of Spring” with Stephen R. Bissette and John Totleben, ships December 16, several months ahead of the 1,600-page Swamp Thing by Alan Moore Omnibus dated July 6, 2027. Jack Kirby’s Kamandi #1 on December 9 and the 80-page Detective Comics #500 on December 2 complete the facsimile line for the month.
Bad Seeds, the August-to-October Gotham event, comes back in three collections between February 16 and March 2, 2027: Batman: Bad Seeds, Batman: Bad Seeds, Streets of Gotham, and Batman: Bad Seeds, Sowing & Reaping. The first volume collects Poison Ivy #48 and #49, and Poison Ivy #50 is the issue that comes next.
