SUMMARY: A successful businessman reunites with a woman he used to tutor as a teenager. Their love has crossed more than one lifetime, and their present-day relationship soon becomes entangled with secrets from the past. Two mysterious witches connected to immortality and an ancient history threaten their romance.
In “Black Knight: The Man Who Guards Me”, Moon Soo-Ho is a successful and self-assured businessman. Jung Hae-Ra is a hardworking travel agency employee whose life has been marked by disappointment and loss.
Moon Soo-Ho appears to have everything a person could want. He is wealthy, successful, and confident. He even owns a castle!
Beneath his polished exterior, however, he carries memories and emotions connected to Jung Hae-Ra. His feelings for her are sincere and remarkably steadfast. He first met her during her teenage years while tutoring her to help improve her grades. At that time, her family lived comfortably. Later, however, their financial situation deteriorated. Her father could no longer afford Moon Soo-Ho’s tutoring services, and their relationship came to an end.
Moon Soo-Ho later studied medicine in the United States, invented several medical devices, sold them, and became wealthy. He searched diligently for Jung Hae-Ra and finally found her. In fact, she literally walked right up to him while they were both in Slovenia. She was searching for a famous photographer and mistakenly believed Moon Soo-Ho was the man she was looking for.
When she introduced herself, he could hardly believe that the woman he had been searching for all those years was standing right in front of him. Jung Hae-Ra, however, did not recognize him. No matter. Now that Moon Soo-Ho had found her, he was not about to let her go. He found ways to insert himself into her life and grow closer to her. He was already in love with her, but he knew he would have to win her heart.
Financially, Jung Hae-Ra is considerably less fortunate. She works for a travel agency but has never had the opportunity to enjoy the international travel she helps arrange for others. Jung Hae-ra’s family was financially comfortable when she was a child, but her circumstances changed dramatically after her parents died suddenly. Her family subsequently went bankrupt, leaving Jung Hae-ra poor and struggling to support herself and her aunt. There is also a mystery surrounding her father’s death and the loss of the family’s fortune. Nevertheless, she remains hopeful and continues searching for some sign that her life can change for the better.
Jung Hae-Ra’s life takes a dramatic turn through an encounter with Sharon, the mysterious owner of a boutique. Sharon is a witch, and she is also a rival. Two hundred years ago, Jung Hae-Ra stole the man Sharon loved, and Sharon has never forgotten it. She is determined to get her revenge. Though she is 200 years old, Sharon looks exactly as she did centuries ago.
Sharon is a beautiful and enigmatic fashion designer who plays an integral role in Jung Hae-Ra’s life and past life story.
Two hundred years ago, Jung Hae-Ra was known as Boon Yi, while Moon Soo-Ho was Lee Myung-So. Sharon was Choi Seo-Rin, and in present-day Korea she still bears that name, although she now calls herself Sharon.
She is tied to a chain of events involving love, jealousy, regret, and consequences that have endured for two centuries. In the past, Boon Yi captured the heart of Lee Myung-So, the man Sharon loved. Now it appears that, in this lifetime, they are destined to be reunited.
Neither Jung Hae-Ra nor Moon Soo-Ho realizes that their relationship is connected to something far greater than an ordinary romance. Neither knows that Sharon, consumed by bitterness and resentment, is determined to keep them apart.
Jang Baek-Hee, also known as Becky, shares an unusual history with Sharon. She possesses knowledge of events that ordinary people could never imagine.
The two women have known each other for 200 years, with Becky repeatedly attempting to stop Sharon’s obsessive pursuit of a man who does not love her. Becky was involved in the tragedy of their previous lives and is also living under a curse. However, she has spent centuries performing good deeds in an effort to atone for her past mistakes, and as a result, she has begun to age.
She welcomes this change because she has grown weary of immortality in this world. Becky recognizes that Moon Soo-Ho and Jung Hae-Ra are the reincarnations of Lee Myung-So and Boon Yi. Perhaps, if she helps the couple reunite, she will finally be freed from her punishment.
When Moon Soo-Ho and Jung Hae-Ra encounter one another again as adults, their relationship begins to awaken memories and emotions that feel strangely familiar. Their developing romance becomes intertwined with questions of identity, past lives, and destiny.
As the line between past and present begins to blur, they must confront forces that have been working against them for centuries.
Can their love survive the mysterious powers determined to keep them apart?
*Five Best Korean Dramas for Fans of Shin Se-Kyung
Where to Watch: Viki, KOCOWA+, Apple TV, and The Roku Channel
My personal rating is the same as the Viki viewers.
“Black Knight”, full title “Black Knight: The Man Who Guards Me”, gets high praise for the gorgeous locations they filmed in Slovenia. It also deserves praise for an interesting storyline: a romantic fantasy K-drama that blends love, fate, mystery, revenge, and supernatural elements into a story that stretches across generations.
(NOTE: Not to be confused with “Black Knight”, the 2023 dystopian sci-fi K-drama on Netflix.)
