In “Bitter Sweet Hell”, No Yeong-Won is a psychology consultant. Because she was so good at her job she became a celebrity. Not only did she receive awards, but people lined up to make an appointment to see her. She enjoying a successful career and her personal life also “appears to be” perfect. Until one day …
No Yeong-Won’s parents both passed away. Sadly, her father committed suicide. He was being investigated for fraud and sexual harassment. No Yeong-Won was not very supportive. Her mother had already passed away and she angrily spoke to her father coldly saying that he’s the dad and he should protect his family. Perhaps suicide was his way of protecting her.
After the tragedy, her father had a close friend who looked after No Yeong-Won and did a little match-making. He got her married to his son.
In her married life, No Yeong-Won had no reason to be suspicious of her husband. She believed he was perfect until she saw him with “a friend” one day. Later on, he brings that friend home to get to know his son. She tells her husband she doesn’t like the idea of him bringing people to “her” house. He assures her she has nothing to worry about. The man is a dear friend who can help their son with math. So you better get used to it because the guy will be coming to the house regularly.
As far as parenting, No Yeong-Won has only one son and lately he has been “misbehaving”, according to the school officials. She doesn’t know what’s wrong but she wante her son to know that whatever the problem is … she is on his side. Is there a parent raising a teenager who doesn’t have any trouble or difficulty?
But what about the in-laws? Her father-in-law thought his daughter-in-law was the best! But Hong Sa-Gang, her mother-in-law? She was kind of prickly and not easy to please. In fact she always seemed to be disgruntled, dissatisfied, and unhappy. Another thing? She always seemed to be writing a book. Hong Sa-Gang wrote mystery books and one of her books is very popular.
Strange things began to happen in No Yeong-Won’s life and her world would begin to unravel.
FIRST: A patient, a young woman, came to her office and told her she was involved with someone. The patient couldn’t understand why that person didn’t just get a divorce and leave. It was so obvious the person was unhappy. Do people have to stay together just because they are family? Later, No Yeong-Won’s father-in-law died. At his funeral, her patient was at the ceremony and she was very distraught. So? The young woman knew about her family? What did she know?
SECOND: She started receiving packages at her office. One of the packages was a pigeon with its head broken off, It contained that said: “Do you really know your family?” There was no way to identify the sender.
THIRD: At her house, after the funeral, No Yeong-Won found a flash drive in her father-in-law’s safe and one of the files was a recording. She was shocked! Her father was innocent and her father-in-law had a part in framing an innocent man for crimes he had not committed. All this time she thought her father-in-law’s love and care had been genuine. Could it be that he was just acting out of a guilty conscience? Her mother-in-law was listening to music and dancing which is hardly the actions of a sorrowful widow. When No Yeong-Won confronted her about the recording her mother-in-law’s response was coldhearted but realistic. Hong Sa-Gang told her that both men were dead. What good is it to reveal this to the public now? She said that since No Yeong-Won was still living, she better think about what’s best for her. Dig up the dirt or protect the life she had now?
FOURTH: Her father-in-law’s sister pulled her aside after memorial services and spoke to her privately. No Yeong-Won believed her father-in-law’s death was a tragic accident. However, according to his sister, rumors are circulating that his death was the same as the death of a character in Hong Sa-Gang’s mystery novel. Could it be that her father-in-law’s death was murder?
No Yeong-Won’s father taught her that in life sometimes you slip and fall. But when you get back up, you will be stronger. She was angry with her father because he had slipped. But instead of getting back up he committed suicide. She felt that what he had taught her was a lie. Strange things had started happening making her question the family in her house. Her house may not be a very fine house, but she made up her mind that she was not going to slip at all.
But something else happened that was totally unexpected, and she and her mother-in-law became entangled together in a bitter sweet hell. Is she being gaslighted?
My personal rating is the same as the Viki viewers.
