Big Announcements From Pokemon Presents Livestream

-

Nintendo promised a new live video full of Pokemon-related announcements this morning, and that is what we got. It’s off-season to announce anything really huge, so this set of trailers was mostly spinoffs or expansions for existing games. Don’t expect the moon this time.

Detective Pikachu returns, as the title says! The gruff, talking rat in a hat has a new case to solve, and plenty of new friends to do it with. Yes, the graphics could probably be done on a Gamecube but is that really important? It’s about how the game plays. Detective Pikachu Returns launches October 6 on Switch.

In a move that might be a little controversial, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are getting two separate DLC chapters with completely different content in each. The only way to experience it all is to own both games, which few people will. Scarlet’s The Teal Mask takes you to the Land of Kitakami where you meet new Pokemon Okidogi, Munkidori, and Fezandipiti. The Indigo Disk takes place in a mostly underwater school named Blueberry Academy where a new Elite Four is waiting to be challenged. Put together, Team Mask and Indigo Disk add over 200 Pokemon to the existing lineup of this game.

One thing you CAN do in both games is get Mew and Mewtwo, starting September 1. Back in the olden days, Mewtwo was the coolest Pokemon because he completely broke the game. You didn’t get him until the end, but nothing could really challenge his attacks. Mew was only available through giveaways (which were a lot harder before wifi) or if you hacked your Game Boy cart. All you have to do to obtain Mew now is type “GETY0URMEW” in the Mystery Gift menu, but Mewtwo requires beating an in-game event. Both Pokemon will be available until September 17.

This very day, Pokemon Stadium 2 and Pokemon Trading Card Game will be added to Nintendo Switch Online. Like the first one, Pokemon Stadium 2 assumes you’re playing on an N64 with the Transfer Pak attachment — without it, there’s a lot you can’t do, and beating the in-game activities is harder (it can be done though). Pokemon Trading Card Game is what it looks like: a video game approximation of the TCG.

Some new Pokemon cartoons were also announced, but they’re made for the web, which means they were meant to be disposable. The weird thing is that the actual, proper show is about to pass the baton from its longstanding main character Ash Ketchum (since the beginning!) to a crew of new kids, and yet there was no word about that in the video.
