Will Ubisoft ever make a better game than Beyond Good And Evil? Not at the rate they’re going, but at least they have the sense to keep their peak game alive. Green-lipped Jade and her pal-boar Pey’j are getting a glow-up for the Beyond Good And Evil: 20th Anniversary Edition…which is coming in just five days!
The original Beyond Good And Evil was created by celebrity developer Michel Ancel (who no longer works for Ubisoft) and released in 2003 for PS2, XBox and Gamecube. Playing as Jade, resident of the planet Hillys, you’re on a mission to expose the corruption in the authoritarian government, which you do by snapping pictures, leaping over lasers and whopping bad guys with your staff in a Zelda-like adventure. This game is actually approaching 21 years of age, not 20, but who’s counting.
The original Beyond Good And Evil HD was delisted from Steam prior to this announcement, and there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth about that, but…let me tell you that I have it, and it’s not worth much, at least on Steam Deck. It doesn’t even work without getting into the code and hacking in a fix through Desktop Mode, and after that, it’s still full of glitches and has wonky controls. I’m expecting the 20th Anniversary Edition to be Deck verified.
Ubosift says this new polished version will include a new treasure hunt, an anniversary gallery, a re-orchestrated soundtrack, support of up to 60FPS in 4K, and (snicker) “an exclusive new mission revealing a link to Beyond Good And Evil 2” (HA HA HA!) Sure, guys, keep telling yourselves that game’s gonna happen.
Beyond Good And Evil: 20th Anniversary Edition comes out for Playstation 5, Playstation 4, Nintendo Switch, XBox Series X|S and PC on June 25. Preorders for the physical edition go live at Limited Run Games July 12.
