SUMMARY: In the entertainment industry, all celebrities have someone behind them who works very hard to make them into an A-List star. But those who work behind the scenes often go through a lot of drama too and they aren’t acting.
In “Behind Every Star”, Method Entertainment is an entertainment management company and So Hyun-joo wants to get a job there working as an agent. She has very little experience but is confident if given the opportunity she can do an excellent job. She knows the general director, Ma Tae-Oh. Somehow they are “related” and so she approaches him about employment. So Hyun-joo traveled from Busan to Seoul, full of hope, and did not expect Ma Tae-Oh to treat her so coldly. Ma Tae-Oh seemed upset that she was even there. She assured him that she did not tell anyone about their relationship. Nevertheless, he gave her a little bit of money and told her to go back home.
Giving her money was not only an insult to her integrity and sincerity, but his attitude toward her was belittling and disappointing. So Hyun-joo put his money in an envelope and went to the offices of Method Entertainment intending to give it back to him. While she was there she saw another employee quit! Was this a serendipitous event? Chun Jane, the employee’s supervisor was begging her not to leave but the employee had had enough! Chun Jane was flustered and expressed her thoughts out loud: “Where am I going to get another agent to work for me?” It was a carpe diem moment! So Hyun-joo boldly stepped up, presented her resume, and said she could start working immediately. And just like that, she got the job.
The hiring happened when Ma Tae-Oh was not around to object. Of course, when he found out she managed to get a job working at Method Entertainment anyway, he tried to get rid of her. But So Hyun-joo had already gotten in through the front door and had no intentions of leaving. Although she made a very serious mistake and got fired, she managed to redeem herself and got rehired. So Hyun-joo was not going to let Ma Tae-Oh stop her from fulfilling her aspirations.
Ma Tae-Oh and celebrity managers ~ Chun Jane, Kim Jung-don, and Jang Myung-Aeh ~ attended an office meeting to listen to the last words of their boss, the CEO, before he left for vacation. Little did they know, at the time, that his last words would actually be his last words. He died while on vacation. What were they going to do?
The truth is that even before they found out about the CEO’s death, Ma Tae-Oh had planned to leave and start his own company. Since he had no problem being ruthless and cutthroat, he intended to take celebrities who had signed contracts with Method Entertainment and manage them under his new company. But what about the other celebrity managers? Uuhh … what about them? He saw a golden opportunity for himself and grabbed it! The CEO’s sudden death and the fact that the CEO’s widow said she was going to sell her shares in the company, made him rethink his plans.
Instead of starting a new company, Ma Tae-Oh suggested that Chun Jane, Kim Jung-don, and Jang Myung-Aeh, get together with him and buy the widow’s shares. Otherwise, the widow would sell to whoever was willing to buy, and who knows what the new owner(s) would be like. Ma Tae-Oh, Chun Jane, Kim Jung-don, and Jang Myung-Aeh, were with the company from the start and contributed their blood, sweat, and tears towards making it successful. Why should they let their hard work go down the drain? Ma Tae-Oh didn’t appeal to their business mind, he appealed to their hearts.
Of course, he had an ulterior motive and had already calculated what was in it for him! Even so, considering their other options and choices, investing together in Method Entertainment seemed to be a practical and wise decision for all parties involved: for the managers, the support staff, and the celebrities who had signed contracts with them. While they were deciding the future of the company, investigators from the National Tax Service walked in and announced that Method Entertainment was going to be audited. Uh oh! Did the CEO do something with the financial books and records that they weren’t aware of?
My personal rating is 8 out of 10 stars.
One of the members in the forum mentioned this series, so I watched it. Glad it was available on Netflix. There’s a lot of drama that goes on behind-the-scenes in the entertainment business. Many celebrity agents or talent agents can earn hundreds of thousands, or even millions of dollars per year, but it is not easy money. After watching “Behind Every Star”, it became very clear to me that they work for every penny! Running an agency is cutthroat!
The French TV series “Call My Agent!” has four (4) seasons that aired from 2015 to 2020. As of 2025, a second season of “Behind Every Star” has been confirmed, but no official release date has been announced.
