Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Trailer Is Out And Sowing Chaos

-

At some point on the set of Wednesday, executive producer Tim Burton, star Jenna Ortega and directors Alfred Gough and Miles Millar came to the same conclusion: “NOW is the time to make a Beetlejuice sequel, and we can do it together.” Thus the impossible became possible after so many false starts, and a trailer for an actual sequel to the macabre 1988 classic exists today.

Every living actor has returned for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, with the exception of Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis (they have yet to explain where the Maitlands are, but we don’t really need them anyway). The important thing is that Michael Keaton is back in full ghost makeup, belching and going “darlin” and making impossible faces with the aid of….stop-motion!

Yes, they kept the stop-motion. That’s the most exciting thing this trailer reveals: there’s some CG, as it’s impossible to paste a movie together without computers now, but whenever a thing happens, it’s hand-animated. When the Sand Worm chases Lydia’s daughter, it’s a real worm model someone made and is moving one frame at a time. This is very good news — it means they fully understand how to keep the charm intact.

Though Beetlejuice seems to have his flirtations moments with Lydia (Winona Ryder) in this trailer, he’s actually returned as a committed man. Monica Bellucci’s role has now been confirmed as Beetlejuice’s wife. We also now know what he’s been up to all that time in the waiting room: he eventually took over the entire operation (and met someone). What business he has up above is unclear, but as he would put it, you don’t really need a REASON to cause chaos if the opportunity presents itself. HONK HONK!

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice opens in theaters September 6.
