Since Game of Thrones seems to have proven that it can live beyond its original series, Warner Bros will soon be seeing if it can live beyond its original medium. The world of Westeros will leap from TV set to movie screen in 2029, the studio announced today, with Aegon’s Conquest.
What story in George R R Martin’s large library of lore could be worthy enough of such a presentation? They think they’ve got one: the movie will be about Aegon the First, the original Lord of the Seven Kingdoms and the father of the Targaryen dynasty. If you’re confused as to how many characters across this series can be named “Aegon,” well, it’s true to life…many royal families kept giving their children the same name, and the tradition continues today with the youngest heir to the British throne being yet another George.
Aegon the First’s tale is the Prequel of Prequels (unless WB ever decides to make a prequel before this one). He established pretty much everything about upper Westeros society, for better and worse, and his prophecy about the nation’s future, the Song of Ice and Fire, would result in conflict after conflict from people believing they could fulfill it. The currently running series House Of The Dragon is about Rhaenyra’s belief she is the one prophecied.
WB has lined up some respectable talent to make Aegon’s Conquest memorable: Owen Harris has been hired as director, and he has some experience with the series through A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. He’ll be working off a script by Beau Willimon, who has an impressive SIX episodes of Star Wars: Andor on his resume. The Game of Theaters begins June 1, 2029.
