Adult Swim Orders New Anime “Lazarus” From Shinichiro Watanabe

-

SDCC 2023 has begun, and it starts with a bang with excellent news coming from Adult Swim: they’re working with an anime legend to bring his next big project to life. “Lazarus” is the name of a new concept from Shinichirō Watanabe, the creator of Cowboy Bebop and Samural Champloo.

“Lazarus” is set in 2052, in a future where no one ever gets sick again thanks to the invention of a miracle drug that cures all disease. Unfortunately, there was a side effect only uncovered after everybody took it: it contains a slow-acting poison that eventually kills you in three years’ time. The inventor of the drug intentionally put it in there, because he’s evil (they should have known better than to trust a scientist named “Skinner”). Now a special team of agents has been assembled to track down Skinner and somehow engineer a cure before it’s too late.

“As I embark on this creative journey, I can’t help but feel that this project will serve as a culmination of my career so far,” says Watanabe. “I hope you enjoy it.” Adds Jason DeMarco of Adult Swim, “Shinichirō Watanabe is simply one of the greatest living artists, and it’s a dream come true to be able to collaborate with him on a new original series. Like all of his work, ‘Lazarus’ is packed with big ideas, incredible characters and a ton of heart. We can’t wait for anime fans to see this world.”

Adult Swim plans to show more from “Lazarus” during their Adult Swim Festival three days from now. For now all we have is the logo, shown above.
