In 1990 one of the hottest anime around was City Hunter, a gritty urban tale about Tokyo’s renowned “cleaner for hire.” Ryo Saeba, who has the kind of employment where you assassinate crime lords and rescue beautiful women, not mop bathrooms. The anime was dubbed for the US later in the 90s, but the video game based on it was left in Japan….a pity, as it contained an original side story that couldn’t be experienced any other way.
Maybe it’s PC Engine exclusivity made it hard to release in the video game market of the early 1990s (the Turbografx-16 crowd may not have been the mature anime type). But over thirty years removed, the missing piece of Ryo’s story is finally coming. Clouded Leopard Entertainment and Red Art Games have announced a digital release for the City Hunter video game, and the street date is tomorrow!
A lot of quality of life improvements have been made to City Hunter. It won’t just be in English, but French, Italian, German and Spanish. Bugs in the original have been fixed. Different modes of difficulty have been added to the game for the first time — play in Hard or Enhanced Mode if the original version is too much of a cakewalk. A gallery mode and a music player are accessible from the menu as bonuses, including the anime’s theme “Get Wild” which was not in the original (these guys thought of everything). And of course, save states, a rewind feature and a CRT filter are all there.
City Hunter will be released for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam February 28.
