Zool Redimensioned Comes To Steam Next Week
Quick question: what did Dana Barrett hear when she opened her fridge? The answer is also the name of a classic platformer released during the 16-bit era: Zool. The game first appeared on the Amiga in 1992 before spreading to the popular consoles of the day. Now Zool is back — the original game has been remastered for PC, or rather, redimensioned.
Zool is a space ninja traveling across the galaxy to thwart the nefarious plans of Krool, the alien despot who happens to have a name that rhymes with Zool’s. There are eight worlds to beat with 28 levels among them, and Zool Redimensioned lets you play them in either their original hardcore form, or with adjusted difficulty for modern audiences not used to brutal post-arcade gaming.
Perhaps the most interesting thing about Zool Redimensioned is where it came from. It started as a project by students at Sumo Digital Academy, an arts school focused on training future game developers. The students programmed their own C++ game engine to run a modern version of Zool, under the guidance of the game’s original developers at Gremlin Graphics. It’s nice to hear today’s kids are still interested in the classics!
