Why Marin Wields A Bell In Hyrule Warriors
Link’s Awakening is this reporter’s favorite Zelda in all the world, and I waited impatiently for years for Nintendo to revitalize anything relating to the game. The company finally granted my wish earlier this year when a playable, modern 3-D version of Marin was added to Hyrule Warriors.
The problem was, Hyrule Warriors is such a combat-heavy game, and Marin is such a non-combative character….what would she fight with? She was shown in a couple illustrations from the manual holding a harp (which she doesn’t have in the game), but the programmers decided to dig a little deeper.
Where did the BELL come from? Producer Yosuke Hayashi explained the thought process to the Japanese publication Nintendo Dream, which was translated by Nintendo Everything:
We examined her appeal when reviving a pixel art Marin in a 3D world, and as a result, we decided on a concept that her innocent aura and love for singing are important. From there the discussion linked to an instrument of the Sirens and it turned into a Sea Lily’s Bell motif as that was the most charming way to express her concept.
What the interview doesn’t say is that they came up with an even better weapon that you have to play the game (or watch the video) to found out about. Her special move is that she can actually summon the Wind Fish, ride on his back and slam him into people. This makes her the ultimate warrior. Link has done and accomplished many things, but he’s never vanquished his enemies using an entire whale.
