Weeaboos in Pop Culture
What is a Weeaboo? A Weeaboo is a Westerner who is fond of Japanese media but in an obsessive way. It’s also a Japanophile who is not really about actual Japanese culture. They are more into the pop culture side of things. This word is derogatory slang because most of them wanted to become Japanese. Do not confuse Anime fans with Weeaboo. You can like anime and manga but not be a Weeaboo.
Weeaboos wanted to be Japanese. They either try to learn how to speak Japanese or pretend to know Nihongo. This stereotype was shown on this discontinued recurring SNL Sketch.
Taran Killam and Vanessa Bayer played the roles of Campus Talk show hosts who culturally appropriate Japanese culture. Katy Perry was their guest and she played the role of a Hello Kitty collector.
Most Westerners are annoyed with them. Avril Lavigne made a song called Hello Kitty. It is her tribute to Japanese pop culture, but it is hated in the West. Avril is a real fan of Japanese culture, she knows how to speak Japanese. Japan also loves Avril that the Attack on Titan character, Annie Leonhart, was inspired by her aesthetic.
People accused her of cultural appropriation and racism. She is just being a Weeaboo here, but people got hostile to the song. The music video used to have lots of dislikes but people grew to like it over the years.
Sarah Stevens is the most hated character in the dating sim game Huniepop 2. She is a White American girl who wanted to be Japanese. Sarah goes by the name Suki. In this scene met Lailani, a Polynesian hotel receptionist. She mistook her for a Tan Japanese girl. This moment made her the most hated character in the franchise.
In Tekken 7, One of the new characters is Lucky Chloe. Originally she was going to be a White woman who is a Weeaboo.
Americans hated her because she speaks English with a Japanese accent. She got so hated, that there was a petition to remove her. Katsuhiro Harada made a Tweet that Lucky Chloe will be replaced by a badass muscular American man but it is a prank.
