Weathering With You Coming To US Theaters January 2020
Director Makoto Shinkai and producer Genki Kawamura produced the anime hit of the decade with Your Name, a film that set box office records in Japan and won fans around the world. Given the circumstances, you better believe we’re getting their follow-up film….the only question, until now, was when.
Shinkai and Kawamura’s Weathering With You will receive a limited US theatrical release in January of 2020, announced Fathom Events and distributor GKIDS. The movie had its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, and its US premiere at the Animation is Film Festival in Los Angeles. The latter screening completely sold out.
The summer of his high school freshman year, Hodaka runs away from his remote island home to Tokyo, and quickly finds himself pushed to his financial and personal limits. The weather is unusually gloomy and rainy every day, as if to suggest his future. He lives his days in isolation, but finally finds work as a writer for a mysterious occult magazine. Then one day, Hodaka meets Hina on a busy street corner. This bright and strong-willed girl possesses a strange and wonderful ability: the power to stop the rain and clear the sky…
“Fathom is thrilled to continue our strong standing partnership with GKIDS to bring another premiere title to cinemas across the U.S. from Japan,” says Daren Miller, Fathom Events VP of Programming, Business Affairs & Strategy. “What makes our events unique and special is the ability to provide audiences with an exclusive first look at these highly-anticipated films, behind-the-scenes content, animated shorts and more.”
In its native country, Weathering With You has grossed $125 million, and it’s poised to earn even more when it crosses over here. Fan Preview Screenings of the film will be held over two nights courtesy of Fathom — January 15 and 16. This will be followed by the official theatrical release by GKIDS starting January 17.
