VR Game Straylight To Be Released January 31, Soundtrack Album January 27
At the end of this month STRAYLIGHT, a new VR game by Dr Bloc, will be released. The man they tapped to write the soundtrack for said game is Rob Kovacs, who was initially hired to just come up with the title track, but Bloc liked the end product so much he decided to hire Kovacs to compose the entire game’s score.
Kovacs wanted to go retro with the sound of this one, using a synthwave style composed with tools like a Sequential Circuits Prophet 5 rev. 3.2 synthesizer, a Logic Pro X DAW, an Apogee Ensemble convertor and a bunch of other instruments you’ve probably never heard of. No one knows if the game will be a hit, but there WILL be a separate soundtrack release, named STRAYLIGHT.
“Studying these early video game soundtracks really influenced my writing for STRAYLIGHT,” Kovacs says. “I got the sense that these early composers were breaking new ground, working with new technology, and creating music for a brand-new medium. They took a lot of risks. I’ve taken that same approach with this soundtrack. VR is like the Wild West of video games right now. It’s brand new territory.”
