Manga publisher and anime licensor Viz Media dumped a boatload of news on the press during NYCC, and we’re just now attempting to assemble it all. The first thing they revealed was that they were now publishing manga produced for Disney licenses: Star Wars and Frozen books will be released soon.
Specifically, the manga adaption of Frozen 2 will be published Stateside in early 2020, and Star Wars: The Legend of Luke Skywalker: The Manga will be appearing around the same time. The latter is an adaption of Ken Liu’s novel, which shares the same title except without “The Manga” added to it. Look for art inside by Akira Himekawa (THE LEGEND OF ZELDA manga adaptations), Haruichi, Akira Fukaya, Takashi Kisaki and Subaru (not the car).
So Viz licenses JoJo….any news there? Yes, and it’s good news. The show has been a staple of Adult Swim’s Toonami ever since it joined the lineup in 2016, but lately there’s been a dearth of Joestars and their bizarre adventures on the block. This is simply because they ran out of dubbed episodes. But lo and behold, the new season is almost translated and the English version of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind will appear on Toonami starting October 26. Yay!
This is hardly all….Viz also announced 15 more acquisitions at NYCC, including new Bleach, Naruto and One Piece novels, the action comedy Spy X Family, a re-release for Rumiko Takahashi’s Maison Ikkoku, and much more. 2020 will be a packed year for Viz and for fans of Japanese-borne entertainment.
