Video Game genres that died down that should make a comeback!
Video Game genres is not as diverse at it use to be. Many genre of games died down because they don’t sell anymore. You might see some random indie developer trying to revive the genre but didn’t catch steam. The most popular genres theses days are First person shooters, asymmetric multiplayer games, 3rd person shooters, Puzzle games, RPG and sports. Fighting games , Arena Fighters, visual novels and Hack N slash still have a decent fanbase. There are some game genres though that Zoomers never knew existed. Platformers are not as popular as it use to be but at least kids knows who Mario is. The zoomers most likely don’t know these game genres.
Full Motion video (FMV)
If you enjoyed games like Telltale’s the Walking dead,Life is Strange and Until Dawn, then FMV is their predecessor. FMVs are live action interactive movies and the fate of the characters are based on decisions you made. Most of them are of horror genre. Most of them are PC games but some of them did have console release. They mostly use unpopular actors but some of them managed to snatch som mainstream stars. I know most game historians blames Mortal Kombat for existence of ESRB but Night Trap also triggers it. It’s violence is too tame compare to most games these days but it was too controversial during its time because its live action and had violence against women.
Here are some examples of FMV games.
There are still some attempts to revive this genre but people just prefer CGI over live action.
Railroad shooters
These shooters are in first person camera but they are different from the 1st person shooters we have now. It is most common in arcades but home version existed because of gun attachment for consoles.
On these shooters, You don’t control the character because they walk by themselves. You control the guns instead. The death of this genre is more recent because games from this category made it in Wii and Ps3. Some of these games are horror while others are action. I actually miss this genre because it gives you the feeling of holding an actual gun.
The Chronicles spin-offs of Resident evil are my big favorites. It summarizes the lore of the game with an arcade experience.
Side scroller beat em up
Capcom is mostly known for Monster Hunter, Street Fighter, Resident evil and Devil may cry. During the 90s they are known for Side scroller beat em ups. They are two multiplayer action games where the two players team up instead of fighting each other. Final Fight is definitely of the most popular games of this genre.
You can still see the Final Fight characters as part of the Street Fighter roster. How I wish they can have a new side scrolling adventure again instead of 1 on 1 matches.
Sega recently tried to revive this dead genre by making a fourth sequel for Streets of rage, this year.

Capcom needs to make a new Final Fight Game! Cody, Guy,Lucia and Poison are still relevant thanks to Street Fighter. Imagine if they add Kimberly,Kyle and Zeku to a new Final Fight Game.

Thanks to Indie game developers side scroller beat em ups already made a comeback. There is still a demand for them especially with 80s nostalgia being a trend right now. You can never go wrong with a bit of blast from the past.

Railroad shooters use to be my jam too. it is fun playing them with family and friends. First person shooters have a wider appeal so it killed of the railroad shooters.

I miss railroad shooters because I dont need to walk, I just need to focus on the shooting. First person shooters requires me running and walking. I hated walking controls.
