So unfortunately, this is still happening. Sony Pictures announced today that the solo Venom movie is coming out in 2018. Additionally, it was revealed that Tom Hardy is now set to play Eddie Brock aka Venom in the upcoming feature.
The film is set to be part of “Sony’s Marvel Universe.” This means it will be unrelated to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and apparently the Tom Holland version of Spider-Man, who will be featured in this year’s Spider-Man: Homecoming and Avengers: Infinity War next year. Why Sony Pictures is opting to go this route and making a Venom movie that is totally unrelated to Spider-Man is anyone’s guess.
Meanwhile, Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer is attached to direct the project. Production is slated to start later this fall. Producer Avi Arad has long desired to bring a Venom film to the screen. He’s been trying to get it off the ground since 2007, when Venom was featured as a character in the polarizing Spider-Man 3; despite the fate of Venom and Eddie Brock in that movie. The whole idea of making a Venom movie that has nothing to do with the MCU version of Spider-Man and is completely unconnected from Spider-Man and Peter Parker sounds like utter idiocy. However, it appears that Sony will not be deterred on this idea. It appears the movie is happening regardless.
The upcoming Venom movie is slated to arrive in theaters on October 5, 2018.
