Upcoming Season Of Archer Is Its Last
Notorious spy Sterling Archer is hanging up his suit and gun, FX revealed today. The animated series is coming back late this summer for a 14th season, but only to wrap things up.
When Archer premiered on FX in 2009, it looked nothing like any other show on the air, with its pulp comic artstyle. That style would be shamelessly copied by other shows in the coming years, but none of the ripoffs lasted long. The show also turned actor H. Jon Benjamin into a voice acting superstar (it and Bob’s Burgers debuted within the same year).
While most long-running animated shows change very little about their setting or situation, Archer went through some wild revisions to keep itself fresh. Several seasons took place within Archer’s mind and had him exploring alternate lives as a noir detective, an 80s Miami Vice parody, etc. The most recent seasons have set things somewhat back to normal, but most fans consider the show’s best episodes to be from its first few seasons, before the gimmicks took over.
Archer stars the voices of Benjamin as Sterling, Aisha Tyler as Lana Kane, Judy Greer as Cheryl Tunt, Amber Nash as Pam Poovey, Parnell as Cyril Figgis, Adam Reed as Ray Gillette and Lucky Yates as Dr. Krieger. Jessica Walter played Archer’s mother Mallory up until season 12 when the actress’ death forced the show to write her off.
The fourteenth and last season of Archer will premiere with two episodes on August 30, with subsequent episodes airing weekly on FXX before showing up on Hulu the next day.
