There Will Be A Lot More Star Wars On TV Soon
The future of Star Wars is….definitely NOT in the theaters. After overcooking the franchise with three rushed sequel movies and a couple of spinoffs, Disney noticed how The Mandalorian made a significantly larger cultural splash than Rise Of Skywalker, and decided “fine, it’s a TV thing from now on.” All the theatrical projects Lucasfilm has announced in previous years are now “on hold.”
But we’re sure getting a lot more shows! Obi-Wan arrives in one week and after that’s done, you can look forward to something called Andor later this summer. It stars Diego Luna, and we assume he is reprising his role from Rogue One, as it’s about the very beginnings of the Rebellion against the Empire. After that, 2022 gets a little murky, but 2023 sounds packed.
It will be the year we finally get the Ahsoka show, starring Rosario Dawson as the title character (as she was in The Mandalorian and Book of Boba Fett). There will also be something that doesn’t have a title yet, which Disney is just calling “Grammar Rodeo” at this point (this probably won’t be the final title, a Simpsons reference in a Star Wars show makes no sense). It sounds like Lucasfilm’s own take on Stranger Things as it focuses on four tweens in “a galactic version of classic Amblin coming-of-age adventure films of the ’80s.”
As for The Mandalorian…where’s Season 3 1/2? (Half of the Boba Fett show was pretty much Mando again). At this point, Disney admits they don’t know whether it will be ready for its traditional holiday debut window, and may slip into early 2023. But it could also premiere on time…don’t count him out.
