Squid Game, South Korea’s first Death game drama
Squid Game is coming to Netflix this September 17
The Squid Game is South Korea’s very first Death Game drama. Death game is a genre of Thriller with elements of horror, action, suspense and a Game show. The biggest examples will be Alice in Borderland, Battle Royale,The Belko Experiment,The Running man and Hunger Games. Japan is more associated with this genre. I had seen Manga, Anime, and films that use the trope. The Death Game trope runs like a Gameshow or reality show but with death being the eliminator. The Squid Game is about 456 people who have financial problems like debt and bankruptcy. They accepted an invitation to play a game called The Squid Game. The winner is going to take home the ₩45.6 billion (US$40 million) prize. That prize is bigger than what the Amazing Race and Survivor offers.
The Mechanics of the games sounds simple, These adults will have to play some traditional children’s games. Here is the catch though, losing the games will be worth the life because you will die for real. I see some similarities with the Anime Ōsama Game but that one have High School kids as characters and the roster of contestants is only 32. The Squid Game will have diverse ages of people from different walks of life who are financially desperate. This Netflix original will have 8 episodes. This show will inspire you to be careful with your finances.
The Squid Game is directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk. He is known for making Miss Granny, An award-winning comedy-drama that has been remade in Asia 12 times. This one is darker than his previous projects, but I believe it will be South Korea’s next big Netflix original after The Kingdom and Sweet home. Korean content is becoming mainstream globally. Squid Game will be available for 190 countries worldwide.
