The Most HYPE Moments From Summer Games Done Quick
The summer version of Games Done Quick ran nonstop through all of last week, culminating with a complete playthrough of Chrono Trigger on Sunday night. The event smashed its previous summer fundraising record of $700,000 with a sheer $1.3 million raised for this year’s charity, Doctors Without Borders. If you missed the marathon, you probably don’t have time to watch 168 hours of material (and if you do, you need to get some higher priorities in life), so as we did with Awesome Games Done Quick last January, Popgeeks will now pick the most memorable moments from the event, and link to GDQ’s YouTube account for each.

You may only be able to watch the Bioshock Infinite playthrough in short bursts; the pace at which it’s run through and torn apart is dizzying. Runner FearfulFerret takes advantage of several glitches to skip entire sequences from the game and storyline. Only one Handyman ever appears and he’s able to skip the entirety of Comstock House with one move. He also makes frequent use of the “death warp,” where quickly killing yourself in front of a door will make Elizabeth revive you on the other side. You learn a lot from GDQ speedruns.

As you might imagine, a game as bugged-out as Donkey Kong 64 was ripe for speedrunning at GDQ. Not only are the various cheats and wall-clips interesting, but several glitches along the way are activated not because they help the game go faster, but because they’re just simply hilarious to watch. This Kong’s one hell of a run!

Yes, you can beat the original Legend of Zelda without ever taking the sword….at least until the very end, as it’s required to immobilize Ganon. Jkoper is able to survive on bombs and even has to use the candle to damage enemies at several points, but he’s able to pull it off….for the most part.

As fun as the DK64 run was, the Pokemon run tops them all in terms of glitching insanity. If you think you’ve seen every glitch from Red and Blue by now, you would be wrong; the aptly-named “Shenanagans” manages to catch all 151 Pokemon in just under three hours by ripping the game apart like a wizard. He’s able to insta-warp; he’s able to make select Pokemon and even trainers from other areas appear before him at his command. All without a cheat device. You must see this.

According to the producers at GDQ, however, their crowning achievement last week was “making Hello Kitty Roller Rescue the most viewed game on Twitch.”
