The Most HYPE Moments From Summer Games Done Quick 2020
Somehow, they pulled it off: Summer Games Done Quick returned for another week and took in 2.3 million for Doctors Without Borders, while operating entirely remote. It had to be done, and while the crowds were missed, there were fewer glitches and hiccups than the previous time they tried this.
They were also much quicker at getting the archive onto YouTube…this is the first Monday after the event in my memory where EVERY speedrun is on their account! You may not have a literal week to watch everything, so in the Popgeeks semi-annual tradition, let us guide you to the best of it…
After wowing the virtual crowd during Corona Relief Done Quick, happyf333tz is BACK with a new hour-long series of dance numbers, even more exhausting than the first! While everyone else is able to perform amazing stunts at this show, this is the only guy who can pull them with his entire body. Whenever this marathon returns to normal, we hope they find a way to include happyf333tz in it.
The award for Most Entertaining Host went to Drayux as he energetically sends viewers through the halls, corridors and airvents of Aliens Isolation. Despite this run taking place so late at night, Drayux remains perpetually perky as he dodges the threats of a Xenomorph he’s named Steve.
This is not the edition of GDQ that has the Awful Games Done Quick block, but there were still some stinkers chosen just for laughs. Half the fun of these bad games are the reactions from the crowd, and in the absence of that, it’s up to the hosts to provide the comedy. KZ_FREW pulls it off, and has plenty of material to riff on from this buggy PC game based on the 80s Miami Vice TV show, strangely released in 2004.
We’ve seen Portal plenty of times at GDQ, but this may be the quickest run yet, and it doesn’t even use any glitches. Runner Shizzal does not spend more than ten seconds in any one stage, except for the last few.
You’ll be bitterly envious of runner Eight as she shreds the notoriously hard Genesis Lion King like it’s nothing (though even she takes a death every now and then). Monkeys? What monkeys?
This is the extremely rare time a Virtual Boy game was included in the marathon: Virtual Boy Wario Land, regarded as the best release the goggles received in their short lifespan. Even though the game doesn’t look that exciting, keep in mind everything else is worse.
Despite the trusty screen warp glitch being forbidden in this Link’s Awakening run, mghtymth still finds plenty of ways to break the game, and beat it under an hour. Turns out most blocks are just a suggestion.
Pandemic or not, Games Done Quick will return January 3 through 10, 2021.
