The Last Of Us Renewed For Second Season
Given how most Hollywood adaptions of video games turn out, you might not have expected the moon from HBO’s The Last Of Us — but let me tell you something, it has delivered the moon plus Mars and Jupiter and maybe a few asteroids. Granted, only two episodes have been made public, but just judging by those two, it’s not only the best video game adaption we’ve ever seen, it’s one of the best shows of the decade period. Episode 3 is rumored to be even better.
And for once, the public agrees with the critics: The Last Of Us brought in the second biggest debut numbers HBO has ever had, only outdone by House of the Dragon from last year. What can they do but give us more? HBO confirmed a second season has been approved for production today.
“I’m so grateful to [The Last of Us co-creator] Neil Druckmann and HBO for our partnership,” says executive producer Craig Mazin, “and I’m even more grateful to the millions of people who have joined us on this journey. The audience has given us the chance to continue, and as a fan of the characters and world Neil and Naughty Dog created, I couldn’t be more ready to dive back in.”
So what can we expect from a second season? Well….it’s hard to get into this without spoilers. Mazin previously said that if he’s allowed to make the full series he wants to, The Last Of Us will be three seasons long, with the first season covering Part I and the second and third adapting Part II. He’s also said they have no desire to extend beyond that as Naughty Dog hasn’t even figured out what a Part III would be about, and they don’t want to make up something either.
The Last Of Us Part II is controversial for a number of reasons, most of them having to do with story choices. It wasn’t the sequel most were hoping for, and having this kind of baggage to deal with will be tricky. Seasons 2 and 3 may not be as good as the first. But Season 1 is great so far. Don’t just take our word — currently HBO is offering the first episode of The Last Of Us on their website for free.
