The Influencer Coming To DVD And VOD This September
Breaking Glass Pictures will be debuting their social satire thriller The Influencer on DVD and VOD next month.
Everyone loves influencer Abbie Rose, at least in the opinion of Abbie Rose. She uploads lifestyle, fashion and makeup videos nightly that are watched by millions. There’s obvious money to be made here, so why not devote a few of those minutes each night to a little spon-con? The wealthy cosmetics company Nutrocon wants their products featured on her show, and they’re willing to pay top dollar. Who cares about their reputation for pollution and animal testing, or recent reports of misogyny within their offices? Surely the Internet will be willing to overlook that, right?
All this, combined with the fact that people know where Abbie lives, equals a break-in and a hostage situation. She’s tied up by a team of activists who force her to create a NEW video, promoting a mystery product she knows nothing about. Through the experience, Abbie is forced to confront the mistakes she’s made and admit things about herself she hoped she’d never have to.
“The Influencer is way more relevant now than when I wrote it three years ago, it reflects real life in ways I didn’t expect,” says director Meghan Weinstein, producer of IFC Midnight’s The Djinn. “Watching how internet virality has led to such a dramatic spike in consumerism and waste with fast-fashion, or an obsession with how we appear online, it warps reality and values for so many people in an effort to distract us from the bigger issues going on in the world.”
The Influencer stars real life influencer and comedian Kasia Szarek, and Australian-Sri Lanken actor Shantell Abeydeera (who is also a YouTuber herself). Look for it September 14 on DVD and iTunes/Apple TV, Amazon, Google Play, Xbox, Vudu, FandangoNOW, or through local cable & satellite providers.
