Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin Expands
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin was a huge success for IDW. To refresh, it’s a lost story written by Kevin Eastman from back in the day that never got produced, until the publisher found out about it and got the right people together to finish it. Within no time, it hit the NYT Bestseller List. To keep the money rolling in and stretch this as far as they can, IDW has been coming out with deluxe editions and director’s cuts and even a book consisting of nothing but the covers. But an actual continuation seemed out of the question; to make that happen they’d have to convince Eastman to write another story and that probably won’t —- never mind, it just did.
Eastman is teaming up with Tom Waltz and illustrator Ben Bishop to create The Last Ronin—Lost Years, a five-issue prequel to the bestseller. That story will begin with The Last Ronin—Lost Day Special, a 40-page one-shot due out in May. According to IDW it will “straddle both the past and the future of the Last Ronin universe, setting the stage for thrilling new tales to come.”
The short story is about a middle-aged April O’Neil (that’s her up there) and her daughter, now resistance fighters in an apocalyptic New York City. When she and the Turtles head out on a supply run, they get mixed up in a messy street fight and must battle for their survival.
“As Tom Waltz and I dig deep into the evolution of New York City post-Last Ronin, the Lost Day tale brings the future of all things TMNT up close and very personal,” says Eastman. “Buckle up, things are about to get messy!”
“The amazing success of TMNT: The Last Ronin has certainly opened doors to new and exciting storytelling opportunities within what we are now fondly calling the Ronin-verse,” adds Waltz. “Lost Years will expand upon some of the Last Ronin’s history that was hinted at in the first volume, while simultaneously pushing forward the new reality that was teased in its epilogue… And within Lost Years, Kevin and I are excited to have the opportunity to join artist Ben Bishop to tell a one-shot tale, Lost Day. The past, present, and future are full of surprises that we can’t wait to share with our readers!”
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin — Lost Day Special will be released by IDW this spring, with more on the way.
