Y’know how most networks reveal their full weekly schedule for the fall in May? The CW is just now getting to that, two months late. Perhaps the recent shakeup behind the scenes contributed to this, but however it happened, we didn’t know what was going where until now. More specifically, we had no idea when they had planned to air Stargirl. The third season has been ready for quite a while, but CW has been silent on it showing up. It traditionally appears during the summer, but this year it was saved for the fall, because as you can see, there’s no much else there. If you’re looking for Nancy Drew, The Flash or anything else, most of the more CW-y CW originals have been pushed to midseason. One odd thing is how Wednesday shows Kung Fu coming on at 9 but not what comes before it at 8. Perhaps reruns of something else? The schedule’s thin. I was one of the few who did not rush out to see Joker when it opened, because based on what I’d learned about the plot, it did not sound like a “me” kind of film. It sounded monumentally depressing, and I don’t do depressing. Or at the least, I don’t deliberately go out and pay someone money to make me depressed for an entire afternoon or evening. It is my understanding Joker is basically “How tragic would it be if there was a Joker in real life?” That’s the kind of question you can answer in one movie and be done with it. But it made a billion bucks so here they are, trying to extend it any way they can. And the method of extension they’re using sounds….weird. Lead actor Joaquin Phoenix is returning and so is director Todd Phillips. But get this…instead of a dark drama, Joker 2 is going to be a musical. Though you may find some of Adult Swim’s originals off-putting, you don’t know what you have until it’s gone. When cable dies and the four or five ruling streaming services become homogenized, you’re gonna wish you had a dedicated source for programming this bizarre. Ignore my warning at your own peril. It’s just the Three Busy Debras this week, but if you can’t stand ’em, they’re on their way out. Two back-to-back brand-new episodes air this Sunday at midnight, one of them the season finale. According to Adult Swim’s official description of what’s happening, “[In “Nonna,”] Debra, Debra, and Debra meet Nonna at Nonna’s Nonnaria, and stick around for “The Meteor” where Debra, Debra, and Debra come to terms with their own mortality as a very rude meteor hurtles toward Lemoncurd.” You know, Amy Poehler’s name is somewhere in the credits of every episode, but she has yet to show up. Awhile ago, it leaked out that WB was considering a late April arrival for The Batman on HBO Max. A glitch on the HBO website made a listing for the movie accidentally display too early, and it said “Available Tuesday, April 19.” At the time, The Batman was still going strong in theaters and WB probably didn’t want that information out there, but it doesn’t seem to have affected ticket sales THAT much. You can technically still see it there. But if you’re like me and have no desire to sit for three entire hours unless you’re in an airplane, this is the news you’ve been waiting for. Some defenders of the movie’s length have pointed out blockbusters of the 40 and 50s were even longer. To that, I have to point to the fact that those movies had intermissions. I still haven’t seen The Batman, mainly because WB is asking for three unbroken, unable-to-pee hours of my life, not including the time it takes to get to the theater and back, for a story I’ve already seen on the big screen many, many times. At two hours I might have considered a ticket, but at three, I can wait for the HBO Max premiere. Nicolas Cage hasn’t seen The Batman either, but that didn’t stop the actor / meme creator from bluntly stating to the press he wants into The Batman 2. Keep in mind Warner Bros has yet to even confirm or promise The Batman 2 (though the box office numbers may make that decision for them). He even has a specific character in mind. “The villain that Vincent Price played on the 1960s show, Egghead, I think I want to have a go at Egghead. I think I can make him absolutely terrifying. It’s that time again…the time when Warner Bros looks at its bulletin board of DC movie releases and rearranges everything. What have they changed this time? This holiday’s big release from WB was going to be Aquaman 2. Then 20th Century announced they were picking that exact same day, December 16, to release Avatar 2. WB is getting it out of James Cameron’s way, pushing the film into a slot one year from now, March 17, 2023. However, they won’t be abandoning the entire season…Shazam 2, previously scheduled for 2023, is now coming out one week before Avatar 2 on December 12. Guess they figure it can compete. How old are those kids now? Black Adam has been kicked from July 29 to October 21. The Flash has Speed Forced itself from Nov. 4 to June 23, 2023 (Dammit, Barry!) On the animated side of things, League of Super-Pets was due to be the next release from DC and was heavily promoted during the Olympics as coming out May 20.

Last month, in place of the usual “Renewal Of Everything” announcement, we heard The CW could instead be sold off. Warner Bros and Paramount, who jointly own the network formed from a merger of The WB and UPN, are now considering offloading it to someone else. Now the big question is, “What happens to my favorite CW shows?” So far, the only announcements for the upcoming season have been a renewal of one series (The Flash), a spinoff of Nancy Drew (Nancy’s own fate has yet to be resolved) and the production of three pilots. According to a new Variety article, everything else may depend on the timing of the sale. The deal is, Warner Bros will be officially acquired by Discovery in mid-April. If both WB and Paramount can close a deal with Nexstar (the most interested bidder) before that point, they will likely retain minority stakes in whatever The CW becomes, and continue to produce content to their own liking. A couple months ago we told you about Gotham Knights, another “Batman Minus Batman” show WB was considering making for The CW. At the time it was just a proposed idea, but it just came one step closer to happening. The CW has greenlit the production of a pilot episode. As we said before, the premise of Gotham Knights is that Bruce Wayne has been murdered, and his adopted son has been framed for the crime — and they are still not revealing which son that is. Batman’s been around for a long time and has gone through multiple wards….this could be either Tim Drake, Jason Todd, Dick Grayson or Damien Wayne, who isn’t adopted and is Wayne’s legitimate kid but he’s not out of the running here. Also co-framed for the murder are the children of Gotham’s former villains Batman defeated. A bomb was dropped by The Wall Street Journal this morning when it reported WB and CBSViacom, the joint owners of The CW, are thinking of selling off the network. The recipient would most likely be Nexstar, a Texas-based company that already owns most of The CW’s affiliate stations across the US. Nexstar could then do with the network what it wished. As for a possible motive behind this sudden decision….uh, you’re not gonna like it. The network has had trouble turning a profit ever since they decided to stop making deals with Netflix and foreign markets to license their shows out to other streamers. WB is instead keeping its new shows completely for itself and hoarding them on HBO Max. A lot of us felt this was a bad idea for The CW and we were right. Batman will always be with us, and so there will always be Batman movies…but with each reboot, it gets harder and harder to keep the same setup “fresh.” This latest attempt, with Robert Pattinson under the cowl as “THE BATMAN,” doesn’t seem to give us anything we haven’t already seen. This second trailer, released this morning, is called “The Bat And The Cat” because it focuses on Catwoman, played by Zoe Kravitz. You’ll never guess what she does: she flirts with both Bruce and Bats, she somersaults off the tops of buildings, and she says lots of cat-related one-liners. Yup. I don’t know what I can add to that description. It’s simply the basic Catwoman again. The Batman’s villain is also revealed in this trailer: The Riddler, played by Paul Dano. They have weirdly chosen to give him a mask that he speaks all his menacing lines through, making him sound foggy like Bane did in the disappointing “Rise of the Dark Knight.” His cryptic messages don’t seem to be

There must be some kind of contest at Warner Bros over how many ways you can make a live-action Batman TV series that doesn’t use Batman. There have been at least five at this point, most coming out within the last ten years, and nearly all of them frame Bruce Wayne as either too young, not born yet, missing, or in the case of the proposed series Gotham Knights, DEAD. Yes, Bats is dead — and his adopted son has been framed for his murder! We have no idea which adopted son (aka which Robin) they’re talking about. Depending on the canon, we’ve got Tim Drake, Jason Todd, Dick Grayson or Damien Wayne, who isn’t adopted and is Wayne’s legitimate kid but he’s not out of the running here. Also co-framed for the murder are the children of Gotham’s former villains Batman defeated.
