Sony has been lending their IPs out for film and television projects, with varying results. The Last Of Us show on HBO was an instant classic. The Uncharted movie came and went, and I can’t remember if their Gran Turismo film has been released or not (which isn’t a good sign). Twisted Metal, however, is a brand Sony has done nothing with for over a decade, so what does the recognition buy you?
From the wildly successful (The Last Of Us) to the critical bombs (Uncharted), Sony’s planning to make Hollywood adaptions of ALL its video games — even the ones it hasn’t done anything with in way too long. You won’t be getting a new Twisted Metal video game anytime soon, but there WILL be a live-action TV series. You’ll just have to take that, or break out the old PS1, whichever.

My love affair with Twisted Metal began in the 90’s with the original title developed by SingleTrac and David Jaffe long before his God of War fame. As a child I found the game to be pretty difficult and the AI quite punishing, but the colorful characters, fun gameplay and sheer personality of the title completely ensnared me nonetheless. As years went by the series became a bit of a mess far as quality goes, with high points like Twisted Metal 2 and Black standing alongside abysmal lows like Twisted Metal 4 and Small Brawl.(more…)
