Titan Books Collects Unpublished Disenchantment Comics
Bongo Comics, Matt Groening’s publishing house that mainly printed Simpsons and Futurama material (and assisted Stephen Hillenburg in the Spongebob Comics series), went out of business in 2018, and most people aren’t aware what a loss that truly was. With the Hollywood writer’s strike in full swing we’re hearing a lot of gripes about the studio system. Well, I have yet to hear a single complaint from a former worker about Bongo. It was pretty much the only publisher that WASN’T a profits-first, writers-last organization. A year after Bongo folded, Groening’s “Disenchantment” started running on Netflix, but due to the former problem this meant Groening couldn’t print comics based on his new cartoon. Or could he? Apparently he paid to have them made anyway, and debuted the first two issues at San Diego Comic-Con under a new publishing imprint called “Bapper Books.” Those were the only two issues of anything Bapper Books would print. It was unknown what happened to the other 500-plus pages (not an exaggeration) of the Disenchantment
