Square Enix Just Sold All Their Western Studios

Sometimes it pays to stay up late. Around 11 PM Pacific (or 8 AM in Europe, which will make sense in a minute), Square Enix made the announcement that it was henceforth abandoning any and all plans to produce video games with a distinctly Western flavor. We’re talking the content produced by Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montreal, and Square Enix Montreal — studios that weren’t originally Square studios but were brought under the umbrella when Square wanted to target the West more aggressively. They have now changed their minds. Whether the lackluster performance of Marvel’s Avengers made them pivot or something else, Square’s lost its taste for gritty American and European styled game worlds and will henceforth focus exclusively on the Japanese fantasy stuff it’s best known for. The purchaser is the onimously-named Embracer Group, formerly THQ Nordic, a  European outfit that’s been on a buying spree these past few years. Last E3, THQ Nordic revealed it was working on a remake of the Gamecube-era title Spongebob Squarepants: Battle For Bikini Bottom. Similarly to the Crash and Spyro trilogy remakes released recently, as well as the Link’s Awakening remake, this will basically be the same game only with more polish and polygons. THQ knows there’s a crowd hungry to replay one of their childhood favorites, so they’re sweetening the deal twice over by offering the game in two different collector’s editions. If there’s one piece of advice I have for anyone thinking of getting into the video game journalism career, it’s this first and foremost: “learn how to spell ‘post-apocalyptic’ because you’ll be typing it a lot.” A thinkpiece went up on Kotaku today asking why so many video games take place in post-apocalyptic settings. There’s a simple and obvious answer to that….it’s much harder to populate your game with deadly monsters and things to shoot if civilization is INTACT. THQ Nordic’s Darksiders III centers around a character named Fury who lives in a land of borrowed biblical allegories. She’s referred to as the third Horseman of the Apocalypse and her goal is to defeat giant monster bosses called the Seven Deadly Sins. (And yet despite the mangled metaphors this is a video game, not an anime.) Fury will have several powers at her disposal, one of which is highlighted in the new Darksiders III trailer. They’re called Hollows in the game, perhaps because she gets them from an ally called the Hollow Lord. This particular Hollow turns Fury into FORCE FURY, bulking her up! In December 2017, THQ Nordic released Fade to Silence, a challenging survival game set in a snowy landscape of permanent winter. Your main goal in the game is just to survive, but you also must watch out for monsters that have risen in the post-apocalyptic world. Today THQ added a new area to the game called The Pits, and it’s just what it sounds like. A cavernous area containing the abandoned remains of an oil refinery, it contains new gathering areas you may find useful — but half the challenge is getting there. The Pits is located in the farthest region from the main game, meaning you’ll have to stock up on supplies just to make the trek. Then there’s something called a “snow tornado” to deal with once you get there… You may not be alone though. Black Forest Games has listened closely to the feedback and discussions of the community (and will of course continue to do so); they decided to address the difficulty of the game. With today‘s “Hope“ update – the first of the four announced major updates – the developers not only added a big overhaul to the weather effects, but also the first part of their so-called “catch-up mechanism“. The catch-up mechanism is a system which allows players to collect special shards that increase their abilities, even after you have lost all six lives and have to start over. After having collected a certain number of collectables of a specific type, an arbitrary bonus of the corresponding type is permanently awarded to the player. The permanent bonuses persist even after permadeath. Starting a new game doesn’t reset those bonuses. Each permadeath mitigation collectable can only be collected once. Improved the weather effects across the game. Goal is to increase player immersion. It also serves to mitigate some of the performance issues. In case
