Thanks to tabletop localization company LionWing, America will be getting their first edition of the popular Japanese game Picaresque Roman (though in Japan, it’s their fifth edition). The Kickstarter campaign for the game launched today. Picaresque Roman takes place in a futuristic and very corrupt metropolis simply called The City. Four or five players assume identities like Yakuza, Info Broker, Swindler, Heartbreaker, and Gambler, then get to work gaining influence and power. Each of you will obtain secret information, and must decide whether to partner up with other crooks to become twice as powerful, or keep it for yourself. Your goal is to topple the “VIP,” or the central character of the story who is controlled by the GM. On August 3, Magpie Games launched the crowdfunding campaign for Avatar Legends: The Roleplaying Game. Their goal was $50,000, and to put it simply, they’ve busted through that goal so hard that it is now the highest-grossing tabletop RPG campaign in Kickstarter history. It’s so successful that it crossed the $5,000,000 mark last night, which means Magpie has run out of stretch goals to add to the campaign! They’re not scrambling to come up with more. “We’re still working on several stretch goals through approvals. This process is important and takes a fair bit of time. Viacom is working with us to speed up the process, but it normally takes 10+ days for the process. We’re so grateful they’re working with us to get things moving!” says Magpie. “Our next stretch goal will be at 6 Million! Once we can reveal the details, we will! Free League sent us a note this evening stating two of its most popular tabletop games, Tales From The Loop and Mutant: Year Zero, are now playable on the Foundry VTT (Virtual Tabletop) platform. Tales From the Loop and Mutant Year Zero need no introduction around here….we’ve written plenty of news reports about them and various expansions Free League has added. But just in case this is somehow the first mention you’ve ever read, Tales From The loop is an 80s throwback where you assume the roles of a bunch of kids confronting weird creatures that have emerged from another dimension, and Mutant: Year Zero is a post-apocalyptic adventure where you play survivors that have been altered by the radioactive landscape. They’re not the first Free League RPGs to be made available on Foundry — their Alien RPG and Forbidden Lands were itnroduced to the platform earlier. One week ago, Magpie Games launched the crowdfunding campaign for Avatar Legends: The Roleplaying Game, with a goal of just $50,000. It’s succeeded well beyond their modest expectations…the campaign took in over a million dollars in just one day, and as of now it’s earned over FOUR million, making it the highest-grossing tabletop RPG campaign in Kickstarter history. The previous record, if you’re curious, was held by Matt Colville’s Strongholds and Followers, a D&D campaign that earned $2.1 million over one month. Magpie has just doubled that record within just a week. Avatar Legends: The Roleplaying Game covers both existing series (ATLA and Legend of Korra) in one box. Announcing Avatar Legends, The Roleplaying Game, which covers both existing series (ATLA and Legend of Korra) in one box. The rules are quite deep and better explained on the Kickstarter page, but in basic terms it’s based on the Apocalypse framework. If a recent story is to be believed, ViacomCBS did not realize how many fans the Avatar world had until the series was put on Netflix and pulled in amazing numbers. Apparently if they had realized this sooner, Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra never would have shown up there — they would have been hoarded in CBS’s own stockpile at Paramount+. But at least with this newfound awareness comes the new material fans have been starving for. G4 has announced a partnership with streaming channel Peacock to present D&D Live 2021 to viewers of both channels.
