It was 2019 — yes, before the pandemic — when Netflix first announced they had picked up the rights to make a Resident Evil live-action TV series. Resident Evil has had all sorts of media adaptions throughout its 25-plus years of existence; the ones shepherded by Capcom in Japan tend to be more faithful to the lore of the games, while the ones America comes up with tend…not to be. From what we learned about the Netflix show today, it plans to continue the latter tradition. The above image isn’t from a CW series, it’s the cast of the self-titled “Resident Evil,” and leading that cast is Jade Wesker, daughter of series villain Albert Wesker. No, it isn’t canon that Wesker has a kid. But unlike her nasty dad, Jade wants to fix his mess — the zombie apocalypse he caused that ended up killing her sister (Albert had TWO kids!) Believe it or not, despite Crunchyroll hyping itself as the ultimate anime app, there was no point when you could watch the entire Dragon Ball series on it — until now. The streamer has announced the acquisition of the complete rights, which means every Dragon Ball series is now available to watch there. The list includes all 153 episodes and five seasons of Dragon Ball, all 291 episodes and nine seasons of Dragon Ball Z, and 64 episodes and two seasons of the non-canon Dragon Ball GT. They join Dragon Ball Super, which was already on Crunchyroll, to make a complete set (we must note, though, that for some reason the sub version of DBZ still isn’t there). HBO Max and Discovery Plus serve two completely different audiences: one craving prestige TV like Succession and the other demanding cheap reality sludge like 90 Day Fiance. The two don’t really blend, but thanks to the impending off-load of Warner Bros by AT&T into Discovery, they’re going to have to find a way to get along. Variety reported today that the current plan is to merge both streaming services into one service. Why not a bundle instead? Because some suit doesn’t want a bundle, that’s why. “One of the most important items here is that we believe in a combined product as opposed to a bundle,” Discovery CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels is quoted as saying. “We believe that the breadth and depth of this content offering is going to be a phenomenal consumer value proposition.” He’s on the Discovery side, so he would say that. Shout Factory is pretty much the only decent DVD maker left, but they’ve been preparing for a possible DVD-less future by purchasing properties. They own Mystery Science Theater 3000, and as of today, they also own ALF. Yup, those two things are officially under one umbrella, and could theoretically cross over in their own Cinematic Universe. Why ALF? We don’t know as of yet, but Alien Productions, which has owned the creature 100% since his 1980s heyday, was finally willing to sell to someone. Alien Productions seems to consist of just two people: ALF creator/ puppeteer Paul Fusco, and series executive producer Tom Patchett. It’s because ALF isn’t owned by a conglomerate that he’s been able to make cameo appearances in TV shows like Young Sheldon, Mr. Robot and Duncanville. After an entire pandemic’s length of time, Matt and Ross Duffer finally came forward with some new information about the future of their pride and joy, Netflix’s Stranger Things. The good news is that after suggesting we wouldn’t get the fourth season until the summer, the Duffers have revealed we’ll get it a bit earlier than that. The bad news is that not all of it will be there. We have no idea why this is, but Netflix has decided to split the season in two halves and premiere 4A on May 27, followed by 4B on July 1. We’re talking about a season that’s only nine episodes large, and while that’s big for a Stranger Things season, it’s still just nine episodes. We don’t know how Season 1 of HBO Max’s Peacemaker will end (the season finale goes live in just a few hours), but we do know if we get any cruel cliffhangers, we’re covered. The streamer just announced a Season 2 renewal for the show. The series is spun off from director James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, currently the best DC movie ever made (this is inarguable). It’s been a while since we had to think about Bioshock, but it’s coming back…sort of. Netflix just announced they have reached a deal with 2K Games and Take-Two Interactive to produce “a film adaptation of the renowned video game franchise BioShock.” 2K will be working with the production company Vertical Entertainment to bring the game to life. Released in an era of mindless and colorless shooters, the original Bioshock won critics over with its brainy take on the FPS, incorporating puzzle elements and a political storyline that criticized Objectivism (the sequel would tackle Nationalism). Details are pretty vague at this point and it’s unknown if this movie follows the plot of the game series or if it goes its own direction (like the Halo show is doing). In 2015, back when this whole streaming thing was new, Disney allowed Netflix to have exclusive rights to extraneous shows based in the Marvel Universe. The next few years saw the releases of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist, plus a crossover special, before Disney realized streaming was too valuable to let their IPs be handled by someone else. Thus, a shift in strategy cancelled all the Netflix Marvel shows, in some cases prematurely. However, due to the terms of Netflix’s contract, they would still have exclusivity to the shows for the next few years, as well as rights to the characters that appeared in them. It’s now 2022 and that deal is expiring piece by piece. Daredevil was the first to return to the Disney roost and it allowed Matt Murdock to appear in Spider-Man: No Way Home last December, played once again by Charlie Cox. At one point, there were rumors ’round Disney of a National Treasure 3, but these seem to have been abandoned in favor of a Disney+ TV series. Given the high budgets of these things, we wouldn’t think Nic Cage is ENTIRELY out of the question, but he is not actually attached. There seems to be a competition between Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville and Stranger Things to see who can take the longest to produce a new season. Until today, Stranger Things was on track to win that race, but The Orville just pulled ahead with a freshly announced delay that will push the premiere of Season 3 three months later. It was going to finally show up March 10. Now it won’t be ready until June 2. “As occasionally happens, our show has been repositioned amidst the ever-changing television schedule landscape, which means that the wait will be just a bit longer,” MacFarlane said in a public apology. “We understand your frustration…so we want to give you a little taste of what’s to come.” This makes it sound more like the delay was more Hulu’s decision than his. Had enough Star Trek yet? Paramount will tell you when you’ve had enough! The corporation’s relationship to this brand has been interesting to observe over the decades. Whenever Paramount is doing fine, and doesn’t need to take any risks, it treats Trekkies like they barely exist. But whenever they’re launching something that costs billions of dollars to maintain and can’t afford to have it fail, suddenly Trek is BACK and being produced by the truckload. We saw it with the launch of UPN in the 90s and we’re seeing it now with Paramount+. There was a time when two concurrent Trek shows was a lot, but Paramount currently has a record-breaking five going: Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks, Prodigy, and Strange New Worlds.
