After years of near-total dormancy, Star Trek is finally back and making up for lost time with a ton of different shows at once, due to Paramount’s sudden need for content and valuable IP during the streaming wars. The first of these to be released was Star Trek Discovery, which now has multiple seasons and — soon — its own comic miniseries. IDW announced today the imminent arrival of Star Trek: Discovery – Adventures in the 32nd Century.
Dr. Spock is arguably the most iconic Star Trek character of all time, with his pointy ears, Sam Donaldson eyebrows, and biological devotion to cold rationality. The Vulcan’s shoes aren’t easy to fill, especially considering how synonymous Leonard Nimoy was in the role.
Star Trek: Discovery had a lot of risks going into Season 01. First off, it was a show being relegated to CBS All Access, the cable channel’s streaming service, so if you didn’t have that, you wouldn’t be able to see the show. Second, the series was to take place before the original Star Trek series, which was both good and bad depending on how you looked at it. Finally, the topic of continuity made many squeamish as the show said it would and wouldn’t follow it.
Star Trek: Discovery has been on for a while now, and at New York Comic Con, a panel was held to discuss the series, the future of it, and of course, how it ties into the future series of TOS, TNG, and beyond. One of the big talking points was Captain Lorca, who isn’t like any of the previous Captains, and according to actor Jason Isaacs, that’s exactly why he took the role:
Star Trek: Discovery is the first new TV series in the long-standing franchise since Enterprise, which was meant to be a prequel of sorts to the original Star Trek series. But now, Discovery is going to go ever further into the past, into the time before the peace that the galaxy had seemingly gotten. However, to create this new take on the universe, the writers had to break continuity in some ways, and though they know fans will be mad, they ask for patience.
A trailer has been released for Star Trek Discovery, and in it, we get looks at the various ships, crews, aliens, and more that we can expect from the series that is airing on CBS All Access.
CBS’s Star Trek Discovery has been hit with repeated delays. If the original schedule had stayed on track, we would have seen the first episode six months ago, but for unclear reasons, the premiere date was pushed to May and then to the ambiguous “fall.” It’s ambiguous no longer: today CBS came out with a solid release date that we don’t expect them to change this time. The voyage begins Sunday, September 24.
During CBS’s Upfront presentation this week, one of the big reveals was the first actual look anyone’s gotten at the long-in-development Star Trek Discovery, aka the first attempt in years to revitalize the Trek brand on the small screen. It takes place ten years before the events of the original series and stars The Walking Dead’s Sonequa Martin-Green. CBS was gracious enough to put the trailer that the press saw online. The next Star Trek TV series has found its lead actor. Per Deadline, Sonequa Martin-Green of The Walking Dead fame has been cast in the lead role of the upcoming TV series, which will be available on CBS All Access. A number of casting announcements have recently been made for the upcoming sci-fi show. Star Trek Discovery is set to debut on CBS All Access, the new live streaming and VOD service for CBS.
