The rights to Tomb Raider in Hollywood are currently held between four companies: GK Films, Warner Bros, MGM, and Square Enix, the latter of which owns the game rights. Ever since the dismal results for the previous movie to bear Lara Croft’s name, Cradle of Life, there has been talk of restarting with a new cast and crew — but until now they haven’t been able to decide which. Names such as Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker), Catherine Hardwicke (Twlight), and Mimi Leder (Deep Impact) have been batted around these last few years. Now the four companies involved have finally settled (at least for now) on a director for the new Tomb Raider movie: he’s a German man with one of the strangest names ever, Roar Uthaug. Roar has actually never directed an American film before; his most recent project has been the Norwegian disaster movie The Wave. They must see something in him. According to the Hollywood Reporter, this new film will “detail Lara Croft’s first adventure.” Does that
For Square-Enix, the quest to make fun and exciting games have long been their goal. At the recent Electronic Entertainment Expo, they showed off both new titles, and revitalized titles such as the Final Fantasy VII Remake. While some may be happy with this, other may be wondering what the priorities of the company is. In it’s annual report, of which you can read in full here, Square-Enix revealed that though they are going to continue going forward with new and fresh ideas, they will be focusing just as much on revitalizing old IP’s to make them fresh and entertaining again. “We will revitalize some of our strong IPs in ways that meet the needs of the modern gaming market,” Square Enix said in its annual report (via Polygon). “For example, we will take an IP developed for earlier generations of game consoles and recreate it for the latest consoles, while also proactively developing versions for play on smart devices.” It is also worth noting, that Square-Enix is interested in

Square Enix and Xbox have released the latest trailer for Rise of the Tomb Raider. You can check out the latest video for the game, “Descent Into Legend,” in the player below. The video features new gameplay footage as protagonist Lara Croft searches for secrets of history that are hidden in hostile environments. There is a montage of footage showing Croft in her element, doing some tomb raiding as a narrator expresses how some humans continue to wonder and search for the secrets and truth of the world, and “it is these pioneers who define the future of mankind.” In other words, Lara Croft is one of these such pioneers. Croft also explores deadly tombs filled with traps and puzzles in her search for the Lost City of Kitezh. This video definitely plays up the epic and grand scope of Rise of the Tomb Raider’s storyline, and it definitely looks like Croft’s latest adventure will be bringer her full circle to the Tomb Raider we know and love. The release of Rise of
Shared movie universes are all the rage in Hollywood right now. And to a degree for good reason. The idea of crossovers to build upon what has happened in solo films is exciting. Not to mention, if done, right, it’ll make a ton of money. For comic franchises, and certain blockbuster franchises like Transformers, this doesn’t seem so far fetched. For video game movies? It’s a big stretch. As none have truly “made their mark” on Hollywood to the extent that it would be worthy of a shared universe with it’s fellow gaming titles. One man though wants that. Adrian Askarieh, who was the producer on the recent Hitman: Agent 47, told IGN that he has a dream of a Square Enix Movie Universe. One that’ll feature Hitman, Just Cause, Thief, and Tomb Raider. “It could, possibly. It all depends on how successful Hitman is. If Hitman is successful enough, and we can plug other characters into that universe, great. But if – god forbid – it’s not, Just Cause
Hot off the heels of the recent GamesCom demo, Square Enix has released a new gameplay video for Rise of the Tomb Raider with some new gameplay footage. The new “Advancing Storm” stealth playthrough video is available in the player below. The new video features developer commentary and offers a look at how Lara Croft can take a more stealth approach to levels with less enemy engagement. The new video shows an expanded combat system based around player choice. In the game, Lara Croft will have a wider spectrum of strategies that range from stealth to aggression. However, in this new video, the footage shows how players can take a totally non-lethal approach in dealing with enemies. In the video, Croft has to navigate around a camp that looks like a veritable death trap. It is filled with heavily armed guards and vehicles. Croft has not much more than her compound bow and pistols. The video shows how Croft can distract guards to evade discovery, using her wits and athletic prowess. It
At last week’s Gamescom 2015 event, Xbox and Square Enix revealed a new extended gameplay demo for Rise of the Tomb Raider. Well the complete video of the demo has now been released online, and you can check it out in full in the player below. In the Rise of the Tomb Raider video, Lara Croft is searching for something in a war torn region in Syria. However, it appears her driver leaked her clandestine arrival, and some military choppers attack her ride. Her driver is killed, and the Tomb Raider has to make a hasty escape. After some rock-climbing, Croft discovers her destination and investigates what appears to be an ancient, underground tomb. The footage definitely gives off a sort of Uncharted vibe. Croft delves further into the tomb and then discovers what appears to be an ancient hidden city or temple area called the Hidden Oasis. However, the militia choppers are still after her, so Croft has to evade them. There is a montage of Croft searching the
In addition to the likes of Halo 5, Rise of the Tomb Raider is one biggest titles for Microsoft this year. The sequel to the hit reboot of the Lara Croft franchise is a console exclusive for the Xbox One, at least until late 2016, and this has left many fans puzzled as to why Square Enix has decided to do a deal with Microsoft in the first place. Speaking in an interview with Examiner, Square Enix CEO Phil Rogers explained some of the details. “I hope fans know that it wasn’t an easy decision,” Rogers said. “I think any sort of partnership at this level is a decision that took a long time for us to get to. The decision at a studio level, we took very, very seriously. We knew it would, in the short-term, disappoint fans.” “We’re about growing our IP, this is a long-term decision. We’re going to take Tomb Raider up to the next level. With Microsoft’s belief, passion and sort of muscle to help
There is always a question about what makes a successful franchise/series. Sometimes it’s just having the fanbase behind it to want more than one game, some think it’s have a memorable experience that inspires the developers to make more of it. For Square Enix boss, Yosuki Matsuda, he believes that once a franchise reaches its third title, it gets a big break, as he told Famitsu (found by Kotaku): “Cultivating a new IP is very important. This is my own personal view, but I believe that it is very difficult to immediately build up a big IP. Looking retrospectively at the gaming industry, many games take off or get their big break at their third title. There are cases where the opposite is true of course. [laughs] But regardless, you need at least three games before you can tell whether an IP is going to be really successful or not. I call this my Law of Third Titles. [laughs] That’s why for the first and second games, you experiment to a degree
Microsoft has been boasting for a while about its console exclusivity deal with Square-Enix for Rise of the Tomb Raider. And why wouldn’t it? Exclusives from third parties are hard to nail down. Even when you DO nail them down, they’re hard to keep that way these days. It turns out Microsoft’s deal to keep the next Tomb Raider game on XBox was only good for one year. A PS4 edition of Rise of the Tomb Raider will be arriving in stores the second it expires, sometime within the holiday season of 2016. Some people questioned the wisdom of any third party confining their big tentpole game to one console in this kind of market. In an age when every AAA game has to be a blockbuster or it won’t turn a profit, it stands to reason the game has to be available to as wide an audience as possible. Square was aware of this. One year was likely the longest deal Microsoft could arrange and it probably required the
