The Best From The Latest Nintendo Indie World

When Nintendo announced a new Indie World video would be making the rounds this morning, everyone assumed we’d see a trailer for the highly anticipated Hollow Knight sequel, Silksong. We did….not get that, because whenever these trailer compilations happen, it’s NEVER the thing you want. We did, however, take home a swell consolation prize…the first real look at Sea of Stars and a release window for it. There was a Kickstarter campaign for this game last year. It’s by Sabotage Studio, creators of The Messenger, and set in the same world (but we’re told you don’t have to play the earlier game to “get” this one). While The Messenger was a tribute to action-oriented 8-bit platformers, Sea of Stars is an RPG that takes its inspiration from 16-bit epics like Chrono Trigger. And thanks to the lucrative campaign and its stretch goals, Yasunori Mitsuda, who did the music for the Chrono games, is composing tunes for Sea of Stars too! It’s due out about a year from now. Watch The New Trailer For Sea Of Stars

Last March, Sabotage Studio — makers of the retro Ninja Gaiden-inspired platformer The Messenger — announced their new project. Sea of Stars is a pseudo-sequel set in the same world, but it plays somewhat differently. While The Messenger was an intended tribute to action-oriented 8-bit platformers, Sea of Stars is an RPG that takes its inspiration from 16-bit epics like Chrono Trigger. Sabotage launched a crowdfunding campaign to fund the game, and ended up raking in $1,628,126 Canadian dollars. Here’s what the fruits of their labor have produced so far…a new Summer Game Fest trailer with new gameplay footage: Engaging turn-based combat. Combat gameplay includes active player input during attack animations (timed hits), multi-character combo attacks, boosting, and strategic defense options to hinder enemies while they are channeling powerful attacks or spells. For a more immersive experience, there are no random encounters or transitions to separate battlefields, and no grinding. Both navigation and combat happen in the same environment.
