The only good thing about 2020 is that you don’t have to pay to attend Comic-Con! The festivities commence tomorrow and involve a variety of entertainment companies, most of which will be streaming their announcements and panels live for all to watch. Adult Swim in particular has three solid days’ worth of panels ahead, which begin tomorrow.
Jack is back! Sort of. The cartoon series has wrapped up its story for good (thank you, Adult Swim), but you can experience a lost chapter from the wandering samurai’s adventures when Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time is released for consoles and PC.
Samurai Jack has finished his journey. One of the top-drawer quality cartoons of the 2000’s was given its long-overdue wrap-up as of last Sunday, thanks to an opening in creator Genndy Tartakovsky’s schedule and the willingness of Adult Swim to spend the money. Minus a brief break on April Fool’s Day, ten new episodes of Samurai Jack ran consecutively — and told one solid tale.
Back in the 90’s when Cartoon Network was just a small channel surviving on endless Hanna-Barbera repeats, they took their first steps into original content with a shorts program designed to find talent. And talent they found — Genndy Tartakovsky, fresh out of college, who over the next few years blessed us with some of the best cartoons of the time period: Dexter’s Laboratory, Star Wars: Clone Wars, Sym-Bionic Titan and Samurai Jack.
Samurai Jack is making his long awaited return with a 10-episode miniseries that will finally give the show the ending it deserves. 13 years ago, the show ended very unceremoniously and without an ending. But now, creator Genndy Tartakovsky is back, and he’s ready to give the show its due. For him, it means respecting the old show and taking it to a new level.
Samurai Jack is finally coming back. It’s been over 12 years in the making: the long-awaited return of Samurai Jack. The show returns to Cartoon Network in a little over a month. It’s official Samurai Jack is finally coming back later this year. Adult Swim confirmed the premiere date for the new season of Samurai Jack, which is set to join the Toonami lineup later this March. Per a promo spot on the programming block, the show returns to the airwaves on March 11 at 11:30PM.
Samurai Jack is a series that brings joy and sadness to many. Not because of what is in the series per se, but because of what happened to it. The original series lasted 52 episodes, then abruptly ended. It had no conclusion, or true conclusion to be fair. There was rumors of a movie, but it never happened. There was a comic book series, but it ended after 20 issues. To make things even more sad, the iconic voice of Aku, Mako, passed away, leaving fans to wonder if Samurai Jack would ever return.

But will he make it back to the cast. Fans have waited over a decade for the return of Samurai Jack. For a long time, it seemed that hope was lost. For years, Genndy Tartakovsky would talk about possibly doing an animated movie for Samurai Jack. There were reports of one going into development, but nothing ever materialized. Then Tartakovsky started directing animated features for Sony Pictures Animation, and it seemed like Samurai Jack would become an even more distant memory. That is no longer the case. The acclaimed series is finally returning to Cartoon Network with a brand-new season in 2016. Talk to anyone of school age in the nineties, and they’ll lay so much nostalgia on you, it might be nauseating. The millennials are invading your tumblrs and buzzfeeds with “OMG, xx is twenty years old now!” and “Random things you forgot about from the year 19XX”.
