Our long-term readers may have noticed that The Paranoid Gamer has been down for several weeks now. To put it bluntly I don’t think anyone really liked the previous layout. When the design launched earlier this year it was part of an effort to strip down a bunch of the complications that the previous designs had. To put things like page speed and simplification at the forefront, and to freshen up the look with some different colors. Some of the users didn’t like the changes, and to be fair, I think in the long term they were right. A red color scheme and more bold design have always been a part of the TPG DNA, and an the effort to freshen and simplify things we lost that with the previous design. With that being said, I think naturally we had to move away from our previous designs as it was killing users with unnecessary load times.

Today is Tuesday, which marks the release of the weekly PlayStation Store update. Notable releases include Dead Island: Riptide, Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen, and Thomas was Alone (Vita Cross-Buy). Aside from that, this week’s update is rather weak on any large releases or notable pieces of content.
Insomniac has released a FAQ for their soon-to-be released title FUSE. One piece in particular stood out to us and that’s the removal of the online pass. Given that this title is being published by EA this is more than a pleasant surprise. It would be interesting to know if this decision was made by Insomniac or whether EA is dropping the online passes in general; our guess is EA will still support the online pass business model.(more…)

When Irrational Games first unveiled a gameplay trailer of Bioshock: Infinite I was instantly floored by the gameplay possibilities and general polish. As more information became available, especially over the last 6 months, I became worried that the project might be a bit too ambitious from a technical aspect, which would ultimately result in a project that lacks the polish we expect from the series. Today, Irrational Games released a brand-new trailer showcasing more of the intriguing story taking place in the city of Colombia.
Many of you have no doubt heard about the demise of THQ. THQ has sold off most of its assets which includes Volition (Developer of Red Faction and Saints Row), Relic (Company of Heroes), and a host of other studios. Unfortunately Vigil Games, developers of Darksiders, were not auctioned off in the proceedings and have been forced to shut down, leaving nothing more than a dream to see the third installment of the franchise. It’s extremely sad to see a franchise like Homefront picked up over Darksiders, however it helps us peer into the current state of the gaming industry, a barren wasteland where creatively dies at the hands of poor management.(more…)

Update 2 (12/19/12 10:27 PST): So we did a bit of revamping to make things as compatible as possible. We are currently running on a brand-new system. Some of the same features remain such as private messaging, profiles, etc, while things like the site chat, panels, have been axed. The upside however is Groups (a feature we previously mentioned) is now available. Forums should follow shortly. We apologize for any downtime you might have experienced. The design for the new system will be updated over the weekend to fine-tune a few things, however you’ll notice (hopefully) that it’s far more pleasing to look at. We are aware of some issues already, and are looking to address them over the weekend, as previously mentioned. As always, feel free to leave a comment with any feedback you might have. Thanks!
