The latest expansion for Destiny, Rise of Iron, has outperformed the original vanilla release of the game. According to sales data released by Activision, Destiny: Rise of Iron generation $59.1 million in digital revenue in September. That’s some almost $13 million more revenue that the base game made when it originally launched in September 2014. Considering that the near $60 million in revenue excludes the physical release of Destiny: The Collection, the data suggests that the install base for the game is significantly larger than it was when the title first released, an oddity as most games are busiest in the first few weeks after launch. Of course, the swell in digital earnings could also be put down to new microtransactions that were introduced earlier this year. While some players have complained about the extra paid content, many have continued to buy the extra cosmetic items that are on offer.

When Bungie first announced the new expansion for Destiny, Rise of Iron, they revealed that the DLC expansion would only be available on Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Players on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 would have to sit this particular piece of content out, despite being able to purchase and play every piece of previous DLC. It now appears as if this is a trend that is set to continue into the future as the developer looks to be limiting support for “legacy” versions of the title. A support page on the official Bungie site explains how the two older consoles will no longer “receive major updates and content releases” and that only a few Destiny Events and Activities will be available to players on them.  Most notably, the iron Banner, Trials of Osiris and Live Events will no longer be available while Xur will only provide engrams rather than weapons and armor when he appears in-game. Meanwhile, the studio is remaining tight-lipped about the future of Destiny.

While Destiny wasn’t exactly met with outstanding critical acclaim when it first released, it has continued to have a dedicated fan following who regularly play the game. Even these players though have come to bemoan the lack of new content that has made its way to the title to keep it from getting stale. This is largely because Bungie has concentrated on large expansions rather than a continual stream of smaller content. However, after the release of The Taken King expansion pack, the developer has moved to releasing smaller content on a more regular basis. This has included the Festival of the Lost Halloween and the Sparrow Racing League. While they are currently working on a new DLC pack called The Rise of iron, the studio is aware that they need to release extra quests, items and missions to Destiny quicker than they have in the past. “We’re trying to get better at what we do,” said Rise of Iron creative director Chris Barrett in an interview with Eurogamer, “build
