One of the beautiful things about video games is that they can be used to twist the stereotypes our culture is sometimes fond of. Take for example the numerous tales of princes saving “damsels in distress.” Well, now there’s a game where the script is flipped, and it’s the prince who needs saving. This is what you can expect from PrinceNapped, a free-to-play puzzle that has just arrived on iOS. In the game, you’ll play as Clara, a brave bounty huntress, and have to help Prince Edwin get to safety by solving puzzles and completing certain objectives as you go throughout the levels. “Most of the games we play have strong male protagonists. Your job is to journey around the building, stopping the party from becoming murderous by preventing the various killings. In practice, this makes for a completely unique game that is unlike anything else I’ve ever played before. The Sexy Brutale introduces a number of innovative ideas almost immediately. This includes giving your character both a mask that turns them invisible to everyone else and a time traveling watch that allows you to reset the day. Artifex Mundi have launched their latest game on the Xbox One in the form of Lost Grimoires: Stolen Kingdom. The title sees players take on the role of an alchemist’s apprentice as she attempts to discover the mystery behind her missing parents and a threat that is posed against the entire kingdom. Like many other games by Artifex Mundi, it uses the hidden object mechanic for much of the gameplay. Lost Grimoires: Stolen Kingdom has been available on mobile devices and other platforms for some time but this marks the first time the game has launched on an Xbox console. The developer describe the experience as: “The young alchemist will work her way through countless puzzles and eerie mysteries to achieve her goal and learn the truth.”

When it was first announced as Lady Layton: The Millionaire Ariadone’s Conspiracy in 2016, it was only revealed that the game would be releasing on the Nintendo 3DS in July 2017. However, nine months and a name change later and it appears as if the original plans have shifted significantly. The latest instalment in the highly-acclaimed puzzle series will now be available on both Android and iOS worldwide at the same time it launches for the handheld console in Japan. Word on a Western port of the game for Nintendo’s 3DS has still not been confirmed, though Level-5 has said it will come eventually. As demonstrated in the latest trailer for the game (which can be viewed below), Layton’s Mystery Journey will see players taking on the role of Katrielle Layton rather than her father Professor Hershel Layton. It is set to launch on July 20.

Chime Sharp is the successor to the 2010 puzzle game Chime, which released on the Xbox 360 as well as a number of other platforms. With the multitude of puzzlers available across the Xbox One, though, is it worth your time and money? The answer is almost definitely yes. The game revolves around you having to make quads using a series of different shaped blocks that have a Tetris-like feel to them. They fit together, change the color of the background and are deleted by a wave that passes through the level in time with the music, with the ultimate goal being to cover the entire grid. As you do this, the music adds more layers and your score increases. From the very first instance of starting up Metrico, it is clear that it is a very minimalist experience. The visuals are sparse, the controls simplified, and the gameplay rather basic. While this might sound like a very compelling experience, Metrico ends up being a charming and challenging game that impresses with its subtle presentation and difficult puzzles. The game instantly throws you into the first of six levels without any real instruction or tutorial. Instead of listening to directions, you simply have to discover how your actions interact with the world and control obstacles. Some will move as you jump, others will slide into new positions when you travel to the left. On first impression, The Turing Test might seem eerily familiar. After all, it features a female protagonist being guided through a scientific facility by a mysterious artificial intelligence as the player has to solve a variety of clever puzzles.
