Last month during E3, Microsoft made a surprise announcement. The fact that they had scooped up yet another independent studio wasn’t the surprise — it’s more of a shock when they DON’T do that — but the identity of the studio sure was: Double Fine Productions, the award-winning adventure game makers led by Tim Schafer. Schafer himself took the stage at that point and said Psychonauts 2 was now a first-party XBox title.
I just emerged from Microsoft’s E3 presentation, and I’m exhausted. When you have to watch 60 game trailers in a row, the cliches tend to blend together after a while. “Let’s see, is this about a post-apocalyptic magic cyborg trapped in a time loop with Keanu Reeves while being chased by a giant Lego Battletoad? No….it’s Gears 5….”
The original Psychonauts was one of the best 3D platformers ever made, but it came out during a glut of badly-designed 3D platformers that killed the genre. Time and ports to newer systems have grown its fanbase, however, and that fanbase was more than eager to partially crowdfund a proposed Psychonauts 2 in 2015.
Psychonauts 2 is still happening. The dream sequel to the cult classic platformer was announced last year, but there has been only silence from the studio behind it, Double Fine. Today brought confirmation that yes, it’s still a thing, and work-in-progress footage was produced to prove it (which is more than you can say for Beyond Good and Evil 2).
Psychonauts has been in the news a lot recently. With a VR title coming, and Psychonauts 2 now being crowdfunded, things are looking up for the fans of this cult-classic series.
