Approximately three weeks ago, Sony made the announcement that it was shutting down their digital marketplace for Playstation 3, Playstation Vits and PSP games this summer. PSP was to go down July 2, and PS3 and Vita would have their plugs pulled August 27. Any games purchased prior to that deadline would still be downloadable from the user’s account, but there would be no buying anything new from that point forward.
You may think this is a joke, but it actually isn’t, at least not as far as we can tell. On the official Just Cause 3 website, a contest is spelled out that players can win a literal island, or $50,000. Their call.Still don’t believe us? Think this is a hoax? Sony has revealed that it now expects to post a loss of around $2 billion for the financial year. This is four times what the company had originally forecasted, showing that the tech company is in even worse shape than was previously believed. The huge loss is being explained due to the poor performance of Sony’s smartphones, with the Xperia division causing a $1.7 billion loss due to a large impairment charge.
PlayStation Network maintenance has been scheduled for Monday, June 2 from 9:50 AM to 3:30 PM Pacific. “We expect this maintenance to last approximately 6 hours.” says Sony.
After a bout with pneumonia, Hiroshi Yamauchi passed away this morning at the age of 85. Mr Yamauchi was the third president of Nintendo and the second largest shareholder of the company. Chances are if you love gaming you owe it in part or whole to this man, who brought Nintendo from a card making company to one of the largest and best entertainment giants in gaming.(more…)
It’s clear that PlayStation is courting indie developers pretty hardcore. Recent showcases of the Indie Arcade event at GDC, and even giving them screen time at the big PS4 announcement, it’s clear that Sony is serious about getting the most unique games on their systems. It’s a smart move, as indie games have swept Steam causing massive break out hits, and Sony is getting in on the ground level of this. (more…)

This just in: the Entertainment Software Rating Board has re-rated Grand Theft Auto and Grand Theft Auto 2 for current-generation PlayStation platforms, which probably means they’ll hit the PlayStation Store sometime in the foreseeable future.(more…)
